Carson stared at Grayson for a second before bursting out in uncontrollable laughter. "That was really anticlimactic," he said to me as I rolled my eyes, silently agreeing. I went over to the side of the hospital bed and grabbed a tissue from a box before cleaning off Grayson's pudding face like a mom would.
When I was done, I wrapped him up in a bear hug. "How are you feeling?" I asked him with a smile. Carson was still laughing on the other side of the bed.
"Cancer sucks," he replied simply. "But I'm alright. I'm fine, really. I only have to do a few more weeks before the doctor said I should be clear."
"That's great! I'll actually have to tutor you this time," I joked, remembering the first time we met. I was amazed at how Grayson was still so happy and fun despite what he was going through.
He suddenly perked up and turned to Carson. "Carsy, just feel my head."
I laughed at the nickname because I hadn't heard it in a while. Carson reached over and started petting his friend's head and what was even better was the look on his face; he was utterly mesmerized.
The three of us talked for almost an hour and a half before a nurse came into the room saying it was time for another chemo session. Grayson was taken out of the room on a wheelchair before the door closed and it was just Carson and I left.
"I'm worried about him. He keeps saying he's fine, but I can tell it's really draining."
I took his hand again, and I don't know what happened, but I felt more secure. Something came over me and I made a split second decision that could change our friendship. "Follow me."
I led him out of the room to the elevator, where I pushed the button for the top floor. Carson didn't ask any questions and silently walked with me. We exited the elevator as the doors opened and walked down another hallway identical to the one on Grayson's floor.
When we reached her room I almost stopped and turned around. Should I really do this?
I guess Carson sensed my hesitation because he turned me around to face him. "Hey, you don't have to--"
"I know I don't have to. I want to." I opened the door and closed it behind Carson. "This is my little sister, Sawyer. I think you recognize her," I said with a small smile, remembering the last time we came to the hospital together. "She's been in a coma for over a year and a half."
I sat down in one of the chairs next to her bed and Carson sat in the one next to me. "What happened?"
"Car accident. It killed my mom on impact and put Sawyer in a hospital bed for the last year and a half." I shifted my attention back to my sister. "Sawyer, this is Carson Bennett. He's supposed to be really threatening or something but I guess you can't go by rumors, can you? I have something to tell you though. Dad... met someone new. Her name's Ramona and she seems really nice. It's been a little weird regardless. And Amber's been busy with her boyfriend. Noah has a girlfriend too, and she seems all sweet and innocent, but when his back is turned she turns into this monster. Her name is Lacey; see even her name is adorable. And on top of that, Grayson, Carson's best friend, is in the hospital going through chemotherapy to treat his cancer. The doctors say he should be alright, thank God. But as you can see, I have a lot on my plate right now."
I felt a large hand envelope mine, and I turned my head to see Carson looking at me with a look that I couldn't place. I smiled at him and took a deep breath. "I wish you'd wake up. You would be in the seventh grade right now. I wish we could all be together again..." A tear slipped out of my eye and I quickly wiped it away. "I should go now. I'll see you soon though, I promise."
"Bye Sawyer," Carson said gently. We both got up and exited the room. Carson closed the door softly. "Are you okay?" he asked me. "And don't you dare say 'I'm fine'."
I smiled and laughed lightly. "I am fine though. I always get emotional when I visit her. She looks just like my mom," I added.
"She must've been beautiful. Just like you, Angel." Carson said, smiling wide and successfully lifting my mood.
I laughed awkwardly and looked down so Carson couldn't see my blush.
"Let's go to my house," he suggested.
"Sure." I had to take my mind off of life right now, and Carson was pretty good at distracting me.
