I gripped the red plastic tray so hard my knuckles turned white as I made my way towards where Amber and I usually sat. I set the tray on the table and plopped down in the plastic chair. I was still getting over what happened in the hallway.

"What's up with you?" Amber asked, taking a bite from her homemade whatever-it-is. Her mom was a chef at some fancy restaurant, so she always got nice packed lunches. Her dad left her when she was ten. She didn't ever say much about him, and he didn't call except on birthdays, holidays, et cetera.

But whatever she'd been through, I'd been there for her, and she was there for me. She knew everything about me and my life.

"I'm fine. Just... Brooke confronted me in the hallway. I'm okay though." She eyed me before returning to her food.

"So how'd the project go with Mr. Big Shot over there?" she asked, tilting her head in the direction of the 'popular' table. Carson and Brooke sat at the center, the rest of the football team and cheerleading team around them. Our seat was in the corner but overlooked the whole cafeteria. I still wasn't sure how I'd never noticed him.

I paused for a moment. "It wasn't that bad actually. We got most of it done since he's already read the book, it just needs some minor editing, which can be done over the computer so I don't have to see him. I think Mrs. Warner wants it in tomorrow, so I'll just work on it tonight."

"We haven't done anything together in a while. Mall day on Saturday?" She was right. We hadn't done anything fun in a long time.

"That great! There's a sale going on at--"

"Hey, Amber."

I looked up and saw Luke Reisser. Luke had light brown hair and soft sky blue eyes. He was one of the drama kids, and I must say he was cute and had serious acting skills.

"Hi Luke," she replied with a friendly smile. No! I cried in my head. We were planning! Don't let him disrupt our planning!

"So, I was wondering if you wanted to go to dinner with me on Saturday night."

And she blushed. Blushed! Plenty of guys have asked her out, but she always rejects them the same; "Sorry, but I don't think that's a good idea."

So I waited for her reply, which was, "Sorry..."

Luke's face immediately fell.

"... but I guess you're going to be stuck with me on Saturday night!"

And just like that, his grin was back. "You scared me! So I'll pick you up at seven?" Satisfied with Amber's shy nod, he gave me a friendly smile and turned to leave.

When he was far enough away, I snapped my head towards Amber so fast she flinched. "Something you forgot to tell me?"

"Um... well, I was in drama, and... I sit next to Luke... I don't know--we kind of just hit it off. I didn't think he'd ask me out, though," she admitted with the tinge of pink staining her cheeks.

"Amber has a boyfriend, Amber has a boyfriend," I chanted.

She slapped me on the arm. "Shut up, Maya! He's not my boyfriend!"

I laughed but obliged. "So I guess our Saturday plans are now me getting you ready?"

"Guess so," she said with a guilty smile. "I'm sorry. I didn't even realize it."

"Hey, it's better you rejected me than him," I pointed out. "Anyway, bring your black dress."

She wrapped her arms around me as the bell rang, signaling five minutes to get to class. "You're the bestest."

"I know," I gloated, rolling my eyes. "Now have fun in drama... with Luke!" I gave a little bubble of laughter.

She gave me a playful glare before turning to leave. I grabbed my bag and my tray and headed towards the doors of the cafeteria. I dumped the contents of the tray, whatever they were, into the trash and stacked my tray before merging into the crowd.

I already had my calculus book in my backpack, so I headed towards the class. When I entered, I was one of the first people inside, so I took a seat on the side of the classroom and plugged in my headphones.

"Maya!" someone whisper yelled, shaking my shoulder.

I snapped my eyes open, remembering where I was. I had actually fallen asleep in class. I looked up at the clock. Thankfully there were five minutes of class left and the teacher wasn't in the room. I looked over at who shook me awake and it was a girl I didn't know.

"Thank you! Thank you so, so much," I praised her. That situation could've been really embarrassing if the teacher had noticed. Speaking of him, he walked back into the room with a stack of paper in his hands.

"Ah, Ms. Martin. Glad to see you awake now."

Nevermind.
