I rushed after the head of thick chocolate colored curls, having to fight my way through the sea of students rushing to their next classes. "Amber!"
She turned around and caught my eye, waiting for me to catch up. "Hey, you."
"Hey! Are you busy with Luke today?"
Her smile faltered. "Luke and I actually broke up yesterday."
I stopped, my eyes wide. "What? Why?" Amber had been so excited about her new relationship the past few weeks.
She shrugged. "It just didn't work out. I mean, he was nice, but after spending more time with him, I guess it didn't feel right."
"Are you sure you're okay?"
She gave me a closed-mouth smile. "Yeah. It sucks, but the first few days are the worst. Besides, we weren't even dating for that long or anything."
I nodded. "Well, if you need me to go stick my fist in his face, I'd be happy to."
"It's fine, really. I'll be okay." She stopped outside her classroom. "Good luck in calc."
"Good luck in history." I continued down the hallway to my classroom and entered it. About half of the seats were still empty, and I chose one in the front row off to the side. I pulled out my phone and scrolled through Instagram while I waited for Mr. Tegman to start the class.

At lunch, Carson sat with us. I could see Amber throwing me looks every few minutes as if to say Girrrrl.
The whole cafeteria was watching us, in fact. Not like this had never happened, but they couldn't mind their own business.
"I helped Maya pick out her dress, by the way," Amber bragged. "So I take credit for when she looks amazing."
"It's just a dress," I said, flicking a pretzel at her. She caught it and I pouted.
Carson laughed. "I'm sure you'll look great, Angel."
I blushed and changed the topic. "Did your sister find a replacement bridesmaid?"
"No, and she's freaking out. She's turning into a complete bridezilla."
"That's a bummer. How many others will she have?" I asked.
"Just two others. But there are three groomsmen."
"Crazy idea, but just think about it," Amber intercepted, "What if Maya was the replacement?"
"I... I couldn't," I said, caught off guard. I was surprised to say the very least. Me, in Jade's wedding?
Carson shook his head. "She's right. How did I not think of this?"
"Wait, hold on--"
"Please, Maya. Jade is desperate. She knows you, and she likes you, which is rare. She would trust you and I'm one of the groomsmen." He leaned in pleadingly.
"Are you sure Jade would be okay with this?" I questioned, suspicious and nervous. Be in Jade's wedding? Seriously?
"I'll call her now," he said, tapping at his phone before putting it up to his ear and walking away.
I turned back to Amber. "What are you doing?" I breathed.
"You're going to be in a wedding with him. It's a sign," she smiled.
I shook my head. "I can't believe this is happening." I ate in silence while waiting for Carson to come back.
A few minutes later, he did, with a big adorable grin on his face. "She agrees if you agree."
I stared at him, extremely unsure about this. "She's sure about this?"
He nodded. "She was really excited."
I sighed, knowing the risks I was taking by saying this. "Okay, fine. I'll be a bridesmaid."
