Chapter 5
Mended Hearts
Lee and Glenna were released from the hospital three days later. Their parents thought the two should rest after their ordeal. But both Glenna and Lee begged to go see Alex. After a half an hour of arguing with the two teenagers the parents finally relented. Glenna arrived first on Alex's door step. She immediately gave Alex a hug when he answered her knock and nearly bowled him over while doing so.
"Well I'm glad to see you have your strength back," Alex said regaining his balance and laughing. Glenna giggled along with him. "Hi Glenna," Janeen said coming in from the kitchen and embracing her. "Want something to eat?" she asked with a smile. "No thank you. I just had lunch." "Okay. I've got some dishes to do," she told them and walked back to the sink.
"Lee's on his way over," Glenna told Alex. "Good," Alex said, feeling a bit uncomfortable. This new change of characters was going to take some getting used to. Just then the door bell rang. Alex went to answer and while doing so wondered why Glenna hadn't rung the bell. Alex opened the door and lee strode in with a wide smile on his face.
"Good to see you up and around," Alex said punching his arm. "Hi Lee, Glenna," Lyn said coming into the living room and dropping into her favorite chair in front of the fireplace, book in hand. "Hi sweetie. How are you?" Glenna asked, planting a kiss on her cheek. "I'm good," Lyn said with a grin. "How goes it kid?" Lee asked her. "Fine," Lyn answered with a toothy grin.
"Let's go into the family room," Alex suggested, leading the way. "Hi Mrs. B.," Lee said with a grin at her. "Hi Lee," Janeen greeted him as Lee walked past her. "Can I expect Fletch and Dawn to come through in a few minutes?" she asked Alex. Suddenly the three teens' faces turned sober. Alex snapped out of it first and said, "No Mom. Dawn is....well, I don't know what Dawn is doing." Alex said with a frown. He thought he really needed her solidarity today.
"But Fletch is busy with....some sort of....he's just busy." His mother gave him a suspicious look but then just shrugged and said, "Okay." The three of them continued into the family room and then took places on the sofas. Lee and Glenna sat together on one and Alex on the other. "I did talk to Fletch," Lee said, making himself comfortable on the couch.
"I did too," Glenna said, her face falling. "Don't be too upset if Fletch isn't listening to anyone right now," Alex told them and looking at their gloomy faces. "He told me he understood," Lee said putting his arm around Glenna's shoulder. "He told me that too," Glenna echoed softly. Alex desperately wanted to get off the subject of Fletch.
But he suddenly realized he didn't know how to start a conversation with his two friends, which were now a couple, and were sitting cozily on his sofa holding hands. No one spoke for a minute or so which seemed to be an eternity to Alex. And while not speaking, the trio was either looking at the ceiling or staring at their shoes.
Lyn suddenly popped her head in the door and said, "Mom wants to know if you all want a snack?" Alex looked pointedly at his friends, who politely said, "No thanks" in unison, which to Alex's surprise bothered him. "Okay," Lyndell answered, popping back out again and closing the door. "She's getting to be so pretty Alex," Glenna said with a smile.
