Chapter 25
Back To School
The following evening the Bishop family left the dinner table to rush into the living room, when they heard a television program interrupted by a newscast. They sat down around the T.V. set just as the newsman said:
"The old Rigby mansion at 1300 Jackson Avenue has made the news once again. The last time being, when Mrs. Flora Rigby's body was carried from the home she had lived in for thirty years: after having died due to a massive heart attack."
"An anonymous tipster informed the police that they knew the house was being used to print counterfeit money." Lyn's mother and father and her brother Alex gaped wide eyed at Lyndell, who had been the only one in the family that insisted that something sinister was going on in Mrs. Rigby's old house. "You were right sis. High five!" Alex said with his hand raised. Lyndell smacked it, maybe a little harder then she intended.
"A few local police officers and two of the station's detectives accompanied lead detective, Detective Burns into the cellar of the house last night and surprised three men in the process of printing the counterfeit money. The culprits didn't give the police any resistance, they just refused to talk, saying they each wanted an attorney. They were quickly arrested and taken to the Elkhart police station."
"The names of the suspects will not be released until they are formally charged. And here's a request just handed me," the newscaster said, "Detective Burns has asked me to send out a big 'Thank you' to the person who told him what was taking place in the old house, which led to the successful capture of the criminals. And this newsman's hat is off to this good citizen too." And that ended the broadcast.
"I guess we should all pay more attention to those "gut" feelings you have kiddo," Max said, planting a kiss on his daughter's forehead. Lyn grinned up at him from the easy chair, her legs flung over one arm as usual. "Your dad's right hon. I'll try to take you more seriously too," Lyn's mother said, following her husband back into the kitchen.
As the family sat down to dinner again, the subjects turned to Alex and Lyn' day at school and how their mother's day had gone. "So how did your second day of school go?" Max asked Lyn. "Oh. It was good. "You have Mr. Wells for History right?" her father continued. "Yeah. He's my favorite teacher. Alex looked across the table and grinned at her. Mr. Wells had been his favorite teacher too.
Later that evening Alex, Lee, Fletch, Dawn and Glenna were relaxing in the Bishop's family room. The next day was their first full day of school. the first day was a half day and this day had been mostly assemblies and classes had been dismissed early. Alex was sure his friends thought he'd just invited them over to talk and play video games. But Alex had a more important reason for meeting with his friends that night.
"I want to talk with you all about Lyn," Alex said frankly. "What did she do now?" Lee asked, while Dawn went to the door and peeked out. "What are you doing?" Fletch asked her. "Checking to make sure Lyn isn't listening at the door," Dawn said matter of factly and then taking her seat on the sofa again.
"So what did she do?" Lee asked again. "I can't prove it, but I know she was the tipster that called in to Detective Burns. "What makes you think so?" Dawn asked. "Because of the smug look on her face, when we were watching the news broadcast about the police catching the counterfeiters," Alex said in a sure voice.
