Chapter 45
Aftermath
Alex blinked his eyes. He could hear people all around him, talking in far away voices. It sounded like some of them were crying. Then he heard a familiar voice call his name. "How do you feel son?" Alex opened his eyes wide and looked into his father's face. His mother was right beside him sobbing.
Alex was confused. Why were all these people at his store? Then Alex looked to his right. His arm was in a cast up to and covering his shoulder. Suddenly the events of that evening begin to come back to him. Someone had shot him. He remembered that now. It finally dawned on him as to where he was. But he asked anyway, "Where am I?"
"You're in the hospital son," his father Max told him, "but you're going to be okay," his dad said in a hoarse voice. Then a whole lot of people rushed into the room. Alex immediately recognized Lee's booming voice. "I heard what happened on the news!" he said frantically. "Is he alright?" Lee asked, almost shouting now.
"He's going to be fine Lee," Max said in a remarkably calm tone, as he made room for Lee and Glenna to stand at Alex's bedside. "Hey Alex," Lee said in a much calmer voice. "Hi," Alex replied in a whisper. "Oh Alex," Glenna cried. "We were so scared," she sobbed. "It's alright. I'm alright," Alex soothed her.
Then another familiar feminine voice came forward. "You know, there are safer ways of getting attention," Lyn said, water swimming in her brown eyes. "Hi sis," Alex said with a small grin at her. Lyn bent over his bed and gave her brother a soft kiss on the cheek. But then she was overcome with emotion and stepped back to cling to her mother. At that point the doctor came in.
"Mr. and Mrs. Bishop," the doctor whispered, "I need to speak privately with one or both of you for a moment." "We'll be back in a few minutes," Max told his son. And then he stepped out into the hallway where his wife Janeen and the doctor were waiting. Alex now heard new voices in the room. Lee, Glenna and Lyn told Alex they were going to the cafeteria for a bit and would be back just as Anna,Dawn, Fletch and Chet took their places on either side of Alex's bed.
Anna immediately place a kiss on Alex's forehead and he smiled at her. "You do attract trouble don't you?" she told him with a grin. "I guess," Alex said, blinking to keep his sleepy eyes open. The med in his IV was making him very tired, and his friends looked all blurry. The doctor suddenly appeared with Alex's parents right behind him.
Then the Doc made an announcement. "We're moving Alex to a room on the second floor in a few minutes. None of you need to worry. He will be just fine. I promise," the doctor assured them. "The bullet went straight through without any damage to any vitals organs." Alex himself and the crowd around him all breathed a collective sigh of relief.
"However, he did lose a lot of blood and will have to spend a few days here with us. Alex needs rest now more than anything else. Except maybe prayers. I know you all care about him, but it would be better for Alex if you all left now and came back tomorrow." Lee, Glenna and Lyn walked back into the room at that point. And the doctor repeated what he had told the others.
