That was probably the scariest experience of my life. Not only did I have to come face to face with known violent criminals, but I was starred at continuously by Luca King. I can't believe Vera set that as my first task. My job is to see into the minds of these people, not hand them a piece of toast awkwardly.
"Miss Shelby, please take this to Mr Harbor, he's the guard nearest to us." Miss Peterson orders.
"Yes, Miss Peterson," I say.
The walk from the foyer to the prison canteen feels like a mile, even though it is literally a few feet away. I am stared at by all the other prisoners who are eating. I don't know whether I should be intimidated or flattered, really.
And then, I see him. Sitting all alone. Eyes firmly on me. Luca King. His cold eyes once again meet mine, with anger and lust prominent in them.
I decide that it is best to keep my eyes on the guard whom I am going to deliver the message to. After all, Luca will just put me off if I look at him any longer.
"Mr Harbor?" I ask the man in front of me.
"Who are you?" The man snaps back making me flinch slightly.
"My name's Isobel Shelby, I've been told to give you this message." I hold up the envelope.
"What are you doing here?" He interrogates, putting emphasis on the 'here'.
"I'm here on placement for my criminology degree." I squeak.
"Good luck with that." He snarls.
"Thanks" I mutter and walk away. What a ray of sunshine he is.
As soon as my feet are outside of that canteen, an ominous presence causes the hairs on the back of my neck to stand up. It's probably because I'm in an unfamiliar place and there is nobody around, that's all.
I speed walk back to the foyer and pull hard on the door handle to find that it is locked. Shit. Where do I go now? How stupid is Vera to leave a 19-year-old criminology student alone in a high-security prison on her first day? Completely stupid.
As I try to find my feet in this God-awful place, try to find someone who can tell me what to do or where to go, the feeling in the back of my throat worsens. I am definitely being followed.
This place is like an actual maze. Every corner I turn I'm back to where I started. I make my way down a bleak corridor. Probably the worst idea but it's the only way I haven't been and so Vera must be around here somewhere. The lights start to flicker spookily. How appropriate.
"Lost?" A deep voice calls out making me jump out of my skin.
I turn to see the silhouette of a tall man. As he walks into the light I see exactly who he is. Luca.
"I am actually," I reply, coolly.
"Well then, there are two people who are in a place they shouldn't be." He says darkly and swaggers towards me.
"Well, I should p-probably be going." I stutter and walk towards the door.
As I open it to leave, a force closes it aggressively. Luca tuts, condescendingly.
"Why are you leaving now? We were having such a lovely conversation." His voices dripping with sarcasm.
"Just let me go." I plead.
"I'm just saying, if you really think you're brave enough to loiter around this prison by yourself, you shouldn't be here."
"Actually, I'm just lost, I'm not loitering," I say carefully.
"This makes things easier then." He taunts.
I try to move but he pins me to the wall. I shuffle in his vice-like grip and he pins my arms above my head.
"Please. Stop." I ask.
"Here is too open. Meet me in my cell at 9.00 tonight." He demands.
"Fuck you." I breathe.
He slams my back harder into the wall.
"You should have more respect." He growls. "If you don't do this for me, I will send my men to your house and they will do inexplicable things to your family." He shouts. "Do I make myself clear?"
I think about what he has been saying for a few seconds. This is all Vera's fault for leaving me to fend for myself.
"Don't make me ask again." He whispers, roughly.
"Yes," I sigh. I 'm definitely going to die.
He winks before letting me go. He stalks off, out of the corridor. It takes me minutes before I can catch my breath. What. A. Psycho.
I slowly make my way out of the narrow corridor that was closing in on me with every passing minute. I have to try and find Vera now.
"There you are!" Her shrilled voice fills the room. "Where have you been?"
"I was looking for you, I went back to the foyer and you weren't there. The door was locked too."I pant.
"Honestly, this is why I don't like having to supervise students. They walk off, do half the job and are terrified witless most of the time. You look like you've just seen a ghost." She rants. This is going to be a very long two weeks.
