Chapter Nine - School

We had all settled in to the house by the next day, a Sunday, and today is the first day of school. The middle of April, like, after this 'mid-semester break' they have. We didn't get little school breaks - only weekends and July, and even then we had combat training and hunting sessions.

I wonder what the humans will be like. I've never really talked to one before, never engaged in conversation without the objective to kill. They'll be pathetic, obviously, and might be quite amusing, but I don't know. I wonder if they have groups according to power like we do, or if they protect their own kind like we do. I doubt they have little play fight to show off, since they don't have anything to show off. Ah well, I suppose I'll find out today.

Groggy, I shift out of bed and change my pyjamas into vertical striped black tights, blue denim shorts, and a red hoodie, not bothering to act human. I eat the last of last night's deer, raw eggs, left-over badger, fish, cheese and water downstairs in the breakfast room. No, I'm just messing with you; we didn't leave any badger from two days ago! That'd just be gross. I go out to catch fresh rabbit, one for each of us this morning and rip one apart for myself to eat.

Demons eat a lot more than humans, see, because we need more strength. However, we can go for longer without food with our stamina levels being so high.

On my way back upstairs to brush my teeth, I pound everyone's doors to get them up and yell, "Hey kids; first day of school, up and at 'em!"

Of course Blaire is already awake and glaring at me through her doorway with a look that says 'Stay away from my room or I will kill you' so I skip her room and go to the bathroom, just to the left of her room, to brush my teeth.

When I'm done, I go up to my room to put make-up and jewellery on, then go downstairs to pull my black, mid-calf, 2-inch heeled boots with the buckles and studs on - my favourite pair, but they used to be taller.

Most of the pack is downstairs eating their fill except Chuck, who has already finished and is heading upstairs as I come down, Apollo, who is still half-asleep, and Blaire who has gone to her day job.

One hour later, at 8:17, we're all ready to go. Dessa and Scar pile on to one motorbike, Apollo and Misty on another, Chuck takes Alvaro, Alexis and Celeste in his Skoda, and Nalin and Darva come with me in my Mazda. I know what you might be thinking: how do you fit 4 cars and 2 bikes into 3 garages? We don't. We just leave one car out and leave the bikes under the bike shelter.

5 minutes later, we're all at school and taken down to the principal's office.

"So, you're all starting today and you just moved to the US two days ago?" the vice-principal, Miss Grelle asks.

"Yeah, that's what I just said," I reply, then to Scar I send, "Do all humans have bad hearing?"

She laughed in our heads and says, "Most of them, Akane, most of them."

"Okay, well someone will show you around the school and if you ever get lost, just ask anyone for directions and I am positive they will help you," Principal Shane says.

"Alright then, I need to get these three to the elementary school now." I put my hands on Alvaro and Dessa's shoulders with Celeste sandwiched in between them and drive them out of the door. The rest follow suit.

Apollo shuts the door behind us and calls back over his shoulder, "Thanks Mister."

In the elementary school, Dessa, Celeste, and Alvaro are terrified. It's a horde of tiny kids playing, running around, and, well, being pathetic really.
