Ilosovic burst into the court. ‘Yes, Majesty?’ Only then realised the Queen’s scarlet face. She was clearly not happy, but Stayne could not think of any offence he had committed to cause her to be upset. ‘STAYNE! HOW COULD YOU?’

‘Majesty…?’

‘You and…Um.’ She was now disgusted by her newest courtier’s name. ‘I have been told that you and Um have been scurrying about the castle, and fraternising with each other!’

‘Your Majesty, clearly you have been lied to. I would not dare even think of Um in that way!’

The Red Queen grunted angrily. ‘DO NOT LIE TO ME, STAYNE!’ Stayne needed a way of keeping Um safe, and shutting Iracebeth up. He collapsed on the stairs. His guilt feelings were building up inside him until he blurted out to her. ‘Um forced herself on me. I told her that my heart belongs to you.’ He sighed. ‘She is obsessed with me.’

Stayne panicked. Why did I say that? Now I’ve put her at risk, he thought. The Queen looked deeply into his eye and her face went the darkest shade of red Stayne had seen, before leaping off her throne. ‘OFF WITH HER HEAD!’
