When I first opened my eyes, I winced. It was so bright outside compared to where I was right now. All around me, little children were playing on the play grounds. They were laughing and squealing with joy as they took turns down the slide, as they chased each other around, as they talked to each other. Their parents stood close by to them, talking to other parents, while eyeing their children.
"It's pretty. Isn't it?" A voice beside asked.
"Mom!" I cried, as I threw my arms around her. "I've missed you so much!"
"I've missed you too, Angel. Your dad told me to tell you hello and that he misses you so very much," she said, releasing from the hug.
"I miss him too. I must ask, though, what are you doing here?" I asked.
"What do you mean? I live here. This is my home."
I gasped and tears started to form in my eyes. "Am I...am I dead?"
"No, Angel, you are not dead, but I have to say, you are not far from it. What Caleb is doing to you is horrific."
"If you can see what is happening to us, why can't you help?"
"Raven, honey, we angels, cannot interfere with business in Hell. We would not even survive if we stepped foot on grounds that is tainted in blood, death, and sin. We are too holy for that," Mom explained.
"So, you're just going to let me die here?" I cried.
"Raven, we can't do anything to help you. I am so sorry. None of this would have happened if you had chosen to live in Heaven with your dad and I," she said, walking away from me.
"What do you mean, none of this would have never happened?" I asked, my voice rising. "You told me the last time we met that I should make sure I make the right choice. I did."
Shaking her head, she stopped walking. "Why did you choose both? Why didn't you just choose good? Why let evil live in this world?"
"Mom, you of all people should understand. Where would we be if we existed in a world with only good?"
"We would be in a better place, I know that much," she said.
"True, but in a world with just good, people would never know what it means to be grateful for anything. They would never know what it means to struggle. They would never know loss. Now, in a world with all evil, people would never know hope. They would never know what love is. They would never know that times will get better. You can't just live in a world with one or the other. You need a balance."
Before she could speak, I continued. "Think of it like this, Mom: you can't have a yin without a yang. In this world, people need both the sun and the moon. Without both, no one can survive. Without both good and evil, living on this planet is worthless."
My mom just stood shaking her head. I thought she was going to yell when instead she started crying. "I am so sorry that I brought you to the park that day. If we hadn't of, you would have grown up with us."
"Mom, you can't change the past. Besides, everything happens for a reason. This, this horrible event I'm going through right now is happening for a reason...I am sure of it."
"Raven, my Angel, you are so smart." My mom hugged me, burying her face in my hair. After a few seconds, I heard her crying.
"What's wrong?" I asked, not letting her go.
"Promise me, Raven. Promise me whatever you do you will not give up. You will fight until your dying breath. You will show anyone who ever stands in your way who the boss is. Promise me!" she yelled, pulling away from me.
