I stood beside him, waiting for him to say something, but he didn't. So I started walking away, but he followed after me, grabbing onto my arm.
"I didn't mean for her to end up dead, I just wanted her to bring you back to the island, because it needs you"
"The island needs me?" I question.
I hold his hand, putting it palm up so I could place the ring on his palm. When I put it in his hand his hand curled around it, and he sat down next to a tree, leaning against it.
"When she gave me this ring she told me something" he said.
"That it was hers? Because it isn't, I have hers. She gave it to me, saying-"
"This ring will give you hope" we said together.
"What? She gave me her ring, saying it would protect me from you" I say.
"Are you going to let me tell you the story or not?"
"Sorry" I mumble.
"She said this ring will give you hope, believe that you can change, he did-"
"He?"
"He was her enemy, she told me, and she ended up marrying the man. He changed, and this was his wedding ring. She gave it to me because he was dead, and she had no use for it, she thought it would be better in my hands"
"But... why?"
"Maybe she knew I'd fall in love with you and wanted me to change to keep you safe"
"But this ring she gave me, she said it would protect me from you"
"It did. One of the reasons I didn't kill you, other than your words, was because I saw that ring on your finger. I couldn't bring myself to do it after that ring reminded me of her and what she did for me. She saved me when I couldn't be saved"
I kneel in front of him, not looking at him. His eyes were on me, but I ignored it. I did not feel like looking into his puppy dog eyes, the eyes that would convince me to stay forever.
"What did you mean when you said the island needs me?" I ask.
"Neverland seemed... dead, without you"
"How is that possible? You aren't messing with me like you did with Henry, are you?"
"No. Your magic is strong, strong enough to keep Neverland alive and full of magic. The magic was running out, but so was my time here. You added a couple years to my life, but with you by my side you slowed down the hourglass"
"I'm sorry but, I can't stay. Everything I have is back home"
"What do you have? Your mother? A father? Friends? Relatives?"
"Stop. I may not have all that but I have a life-"
"You have a life here, a life that is more important than any life you could live there"
"I can't believe just a moment ago you were threatening to kill me" I mutter, standing up. "Now here you are trying to convince me to stay"
I look away from him while he stands up, crossing my arms. A bird flew away in the distance, another bird chasing after it. They flew up to the top of the trees, flying against the strong wind, moving together.
"You could save the island"
"I would only be saving you, and I don't think it's worth it considering what you did to my mom. Kidnapping her, making her kill herself-"
"I'm being serious" he says.
His hands grabbing onto my arms carefully. I finally looked at him, at his eyes, to see that he was being completely honest. There was no deceit hidden in his eyes.
"Yes, I am running out of time and you're the only one who could slow it down, but there's more. This island is losing its magic. You can't tell because ever since you've gotten here Neverland has been full of magic again, because of you. When you left there was no pixie dust left, only a little in a bottle I had"
"Show me the tree"
"The what?"
"The tree where the pixie dust comes from. I want to see it"
He takes one of my hands, pulling me up into the air after him. We flew above the trees, against the wind, and when we landed in front of a giant tree I could see the two birds from earlier on a branch, cuddled against each other.
"The tree has already started growing again, so you won't be able to tell-"
"It doesn't look that good. You're right"
I take a step toward the tree, his hand not being removed from mine, and I put my other hand on the tree. A light seemed to grow up from the roots, going up the trunk to the leaves and when I removed my hand it went dark.
"So, I can't leave"
I stare at the tree for a minute, then turn to look at Pan. He was looking at me, no emotions visible in his expression. He stepped closer to me and wrapped his arms around me.
"What are you doing?" I ask.
"I'll take you to your house to get whatever you need, want, if that will help"
"Thank you"
We went through a green portal, ending up in my kitchen. I went around, tossing things in a bag, ending up filling only half of it. There wasn't much I wanted, only some things to remind me of here.
I sat down on my bed, laying down the bag beside it, staring up through the window on the ceiling at the stars. Pan came over and sat beside me. He brought a hand to my cheek, turning my head so I was facing him, and he brings his face closer to mine.
He whispers something before closing the remaining space between our lips. "You're doing the right thing, Seraphina, saving Neverland"
