~~~ Chapter 4 ~~~
Michael dropped me home around 6pm that night after coffee.
Despite me being slightly frightened by Michael's harsh appearance, I actually had a really good time and found myself warming to the boy.
"Hey thanks a lot for taking me out for coffee, you didn't have to," I acknowledged him, smiling."No problem, it was good to get to know you." He returned the smile.
I was about to turn to walk up my driveway when Michael spoke up again.
"I'd love to hang out some more?"
I nodded, actually keen to make a new friend other than Ashton and my friend Avey.
"Sure."
He gave me a little wave. "See you at school I guess."
"See you at school." I watched him get in his car and waved goodbye before turning and going inside to do the homework my parents would have made me do ages ago if they'd been home.
"I was gonna go to the courtyard to revise for a bit," I explained to Ashton as we walked down the corridor at lunchtime the next day. "You know we have a biology test right?"
"Yeah, yeah Aimee I know," my best friend moaned, "do you always have to accuse me of not revising for tests?"
"You know I only tease you cos I love you," I laughed, shoving him. "It keeps you in mental shape."
"Whatever," Pretending to be hurt, Ashton fake wiped a tear from his eye and looked away.
"Urgh," I uttered and poked my tongue out at him. "I'll see you later."
Ashton was going to his chess club meeting. He was pretty weird because he was a really tall, muscular looking boy, but hardly had the motivation to do anything but eat pizza and watch action movies. And play chess...
"See ya!" He said before disappearing into one of the classrooms.
When I got to the courtyard where most students hung out at lunch and did homework, I plonked my stuff down beside a bench and pulled out my biology books, scanning over notes and eventually learning the facts I needed to know for the test.
My focus was broken when I noticed Luke in the courtyard. My heart rate automatically increased like usual.
Especially when I realised he was coming over.
"Hi," he said, and stood towering over me since he was so much taller.
I gulped. "Hi Luke."
"So I saw you leaving the bleachers yesterday just as the team went out on to the field? What were you doing there?" He seemed pretty casual, but something was weird.
"Oh I watch the team sometimes as my parents don't come home 'til late on that day," I admitted. "You're really good at soccer."
He gave me that little smile again. "Thanks. Michael was with you wasn't he?"
"Yeah. We went for coffee. Why are you asking me?" I questioned him, genuinely confused. Not that I minded speaking to him. And two day running after years of nothing!
"Just interested in what Michael's up to," Luke was about to turn to go but I tried to think of something to use as an excuse to keep talking to him.
"Hey I heard that the girl who was killed a couple of years ago was your girlfriend. I'm sorry about that."
I watched as Luke's body tensed. "What?" He asked turning back.
"Miley was it? Who was murdered? You went out with her."
"Who told you?" Luke's voice seemed to have changed, and it sounded as though he was talking through gritted teeth now.
I stuttered. "Um Michael? It kind of came up."
"Of course," Luke stated angrily, more to himself than me. "It would 'come up'."
Bewildered, I watched as Luke stormed off and wonder what I could have possibly done wrong.
And why I decided to ruin my chance to speak to him again.
