~~~ Chapter 42 ~~~ Aimee's POV"Did she just blink?"
"Is she awake?"
"Look! She moved!"
"Everyone just give her some space! Come on! Move!"
Am I conscious? I couldn't tell.
Just a fuzzy haze of darkness smothered me, everything seeming to spin, my head throbbing.
My whole body felt like it had been tossed about and crushed several thousand times. I ached all over, I couldn't move and I couldn't see.
I couldn't see.
I tried to speak to the voices that were filling my head but I couldn't do anything. I was terrified.
Then suddenly, my eyes were blinded with light, and I shot up gasping, but awake.
People were all around me, dressed in uniform and I realised I was in some kind of first aid tent.
"What's going on?" I rushed, scared and struggling but someone gently laid me down again.
"Aimee it's okay, take a deep breath," said a man dressed in green with a red cross on each of his short sleeves.
He was wearing white gloves and was crouched down next to me, a kit open at his side.
"Someone tell me what happened? Where am I? The fire?" A terrifying thought bubbled in my head. "What about Luke?"
The man gave me a sympathetic look.
"It's complicated. Are you can handle all of it now?"I nodded tiredly. "Just hit me with it."
He smiled and then took a deep breath. "Well we can't be too sure how the fire started. But one of your school's camping groups left their fire going over night, and for a while it was unattended and spread across the campsite in the forest." He wiped his hand across his brow.
"What happened to everyone? What happened to me?" I was so worried for all of my friends- I felt sick.
"The camps were evacuated as soon as they could, but there was no time to look for you. Everyone got out safely, but there were two boys who realised you were gone and were putting up a real fight.
"Anyway, we sent a fire and rescue chopper over the river camp and searched for hours. When the fire was over, a team of men went out into the burnt forest and checked what was left of the walkways. We found you and, er, was it Luke? Yeah you and Luke were collapsed and unconscious in the north forest."
My head was spinning with all the news. I felt hungry for details, but I just couldn't get my head around anything. How did I survive the fire? Where am I know?
Am I okay?
I looked at myself for the first time.
I had ash stains all over my skin and clothes and pussy blisters over my hands. But one of my arms was the worst.
The skin was dark, bleeding and crisp. I knew I'd got bad burns there. I couldn't even look at it- it would make want to throw up.
"What happened to my arm?" I felt tears sting my eyes.
"It's okay you've just undergone some serious burns on your left arm. We've given you some painkillers and I was about to bandage it up." He moved to get something and then I feel him bandaging up my arm after smothering some kind of lotion onto it.
"Where's Luke? And everyone else?" I swallowed nervously.
"Luke well he er, he saved your life. If he hadn't carried you to the walkway, you'd both be dead." A serious look shadowed his face.
