It was a warm summers evening, in January. Where (Y/N) lived; the boys stayed outside, playing soccer under the streetlights. Using big black dustbins as goalposts; bins that belonged to the flats (Y/N) lived in.
Their cheers and screams filled the air, alongside the sounds of cars wizzing by, just where the street cut off the main road. Which is what allowed the boys to play their game in the street, only moving for the occasional car.
There was also the sound of parked car alarms, blasting away and the police sirens or was it an ambulance or fire truck. (Y/N) could never tell, she'd lived there so long she was used to it.
(Y/N) was sitting on the edge of her bed, clutching the second hand BlackBerry 8520 her parents had given to her. It's screen's glow, illuminating her face. Her bed was littered with brand new school books.
Some of them untouched and some with as little as two lines worth of writing. Non of them were covered. In primary school, every book had to be covered in brown paper but in high school you could cover them in whatever you want.
(Y/N) was still deciding what she was going to do.(It's worth mentioning, that (Y/N) cover all her books in spongebob wrapping, for every year in high school. And refused to do otherwise, no matter how much her mom begged)
(Y/N) was mid groan, staring at her mothers BlackBerry messenger profile picture. It was a picture of (Y/N) in her school uniform. She was wearing a white shirt and a dark blue tie, grey dress pants and black boys school shoes. Her hair was brushed back into a neat ponytail. (If your hair is short then ignore that.)
She was smiling awkwardly, showcasing her braces. She was looking screen left as if she was looking at someone approaching. (Y/N) locked the phone and got up off her bed, about to leave her room.
Only stopping in her tracks, when her phone started ringing. (Y/N) looked at the caller ID. "Sparky<3." (Y/N) smiled at the childhood nickname, and answered. "Hey sleepy head!" (Y/N) said cheerfully. (Y/N) knew Ben would only be waking up, because of the time difference.
"Hey toofwes." Ben greeted back in a cutesie, groggy voice. His voice by now was deep and manly. "Bleh. I have all my teeth now!" (Y/N) commented. "It's been that long since I've seen you." Ben said in a less cheerful tone.
There was a shuffling noise. "(Y/N), I miss you." Ben said sadly. (Y/N) shoved her free hand into her pocket. "I miss you too Benny, I wish I could come. I really do but-" "You're family is going through a tough time financially, I know." Ben finished.
"Yeah." (Y/N) said in a sigh. She walked back to her bed and shoved all her belongings off of it. It all landing on the floor in a crash. (Y/N) flopped on the bed, with a groan. The springs creaking.
"Don't sound so down my foreign princess!" Ben said seductively. (Y/N) clicked her tongue. "I'm in my country, I'm just a normal princess." (Y/N) said smugly. "Not for long." Ben hummed.
(Y/N) sat up, she felt a sting of excitement go through her. "What do you mean?" She asked. "You know what I mean." Ben answered. (Y/N) hoped onto the bed And squealed in excitement.
"When? How?!" (Y/N) asked excitedly. (Y/N) stopped jumping and sat down on the bed, the springs creaking. "When you get here, you've gotta give my parents the biggest hug ever." Ben replied vaguely.
"When?" (Y/N) asked. "I know you literally just started your first year of high school today buuut next week you're coming. And I'm keeping you for an entire month." Ben stated happily.
(Y/N) tilted her head like a confused puppy, her eyebrow raised. "A month? My dad said I can stay for a month?" (Y/N) asked skeptically. There was more movement on his side. "I said the same thing." Ben said, amazed.
"So when am I reuniting with my sparky?" (Y/N) asked excitedly. "I told you Next week princess ." Ben replied blankly. "I'm sorry I'm just taken back...I only get a week in school?" (Y/N) asked in surprise. (Y/N) flopped on her back, swinging her legs over and resting her feet on the headboard.
"Yes, and talking about school." Ben said slyly. "Oh, spare me!" (Y/N) spat defensively, with a smile on her face. "You look sooo good!" Ben said in a laugh. "I wasn't ready!" (Y/N) wined.
"No, no! You look great!" Ben said sarcastically. (Y/N) groaned in reply. "Oh toofwes, you look so good with your little braces!" Ben said sweetly. "Shut up!" (Y/N) snapped. "Okay, okay. I'm going to play Madjoras mask anyway." Ben stated.
"Don't you have school?" (Y/N) asked, confused. "Don't feel like it." Ben said smugly. "Oh, you haven't changed after all these years, have you." (Y/N) hummed. "And I never will." Ben yelled in victory.
(Y/N) and Ben both laughed briefly. "It's probably past your bed time." Ben commented. (Y/N) clicked her tongue and rolled her eyes, perfectly aware that he couldn't see it but she felt the need to do it.
There was an uncomfortable silence between them, (Y/N) could almost feel that there was something on his mind. "And (Y/N)." Ben said in a sigh. (Y/N) held her breath. "Yeah." She said quietly.
"I love you, okay." He said almost sadly. And for some reason, (Y/N) felt her heart drop. They weren't involved romantically and it was never a topic up for discussion, they were always close and still young but Ben always told (Y/N) he loved her.
But this time, seemed different and it made (Y/N) upset. It rubbed her up the wrong way. (Y/N) sat up, sliding her feet off of the headboard and crossing her legs. "I love you too Ben." (Y/N) said sadly.
"Never forget that I love you, and I always will." Ben paused. "See you later toofwes!" Ben sang. "Later. Don't go touching Jellyfish, sparky." (Y/N) said with forced enthusiasm. There was silence for a moment, then the line went dead.
(Y/N) looked at her phone for a moment, allowing that unsettling feeling pass. Then continued on with her night.
*The next day*
The rainfall, beat against the classroom window. (Y/N) loved everything about the rain even when she was at school, but today, something seemed off. She had this weird unsettling feeling in her stomach.
"Welcome to your first Afrikaans class for the year!" The Afrikaans teacher stated. (Y/N) wasn't someone who enjoyed being in class or school even. She barely had any friends yet, and she wasn't exactly planing on making a lot.
"Okay class, I'm miss-" there was a blast of static, that drew the entire classes attention. It was the intercom system. A female voice spoke "Ma-am, is (Y/N) (L/N) there?" The teacher looked back at the class.
"Is there a-" (Y/N) raised her hand. She didn't expect the teacher to know her name, seeing as this was a new school and this was only her second day. "There is." The teacher replied to the voice.
"Could you send her to the office with her bag." The woman said, then there was static and the intercom went off. "I wonder what could happen that your being pulled out of school on the second day." The teacher asked (Y/N)
(Y/N) shrugged. She pulled her backpack over her shoulder and hurriedly made her way down to the office. When (Y/N) pushed past the glass and wooden door she spotted her mother and father sitting in the waiting area.
(Y/N) fixed her backpack. "Mom? Dad?" (Y/N) asked in surprise. They both turned round to look at (Y/N), they had sad expressions on their face. "(Y/N), I think it's best you sit down" (Y/N)'s father said.
