I woke up to my back and neck screaming at me. I had fallen asleep on the couch last night and was disappointed to find Feorie not by my side. However, what I did find was a note written in her handwriting stating she would call me. Where the hell was my phone? I got up slowly, trying to stretch out my stiff body, rolling my neck and hearing it crack several times. Ouch. Last night had been intense, I had exploded on her without really meaning to. But after seeing her out so casually after ignoring me for days it just struck a nerve in me that I didn't know was irritated. If I was going to get through this day I needed to start brewing up some coffee.
I heard my phone ringing and I walked over to it expecting to see Feorie's name but instead it was one of my subordinates, Zack.
"Hello?" I halfway groaned.
"Chief, we're at the scene of the crime, there's been another victim" Zack stated.
I rubbed my temples tiredly, "How fresh is this one?"
"It looks like it took place last night. The neighbors heard gunshots and called the police, we arrested someone, but he says the only reason he was there was because he came to collect money from the victim. He says he shot the door down" Zack explained.
"Alright, I'm coming down to the scene" I said.
"Well Chief we've got it under control but if you feel the need to come I'll text you the address" Zack stated.
I hung up the phone and sighed before hurriedly getting ready to leave my apartment. This investigation was really beginning to tire me out not only physically but mentally as well. What was I not seeing? Within an hour and a half, I was on the scene. The body was still on the bed and forensics were dusting around as usual, cameras flashing, people talking, and it was all giving me a headache. I was greeted respectfully by everyone and finally Timothy came over to brief me on what was what. Basically, it was the same damn thing as always. A bunch of nothing. What was I not seeing? Something was there under the surface, but I just couldn't quite scratch it. However, I could feel it. My intuition, as I liked to call it, was going into over drive. Something about this scene of the crime was different and I just needed to really take a good look at it.
I peered around to see if anyone was looking at me and was grateful everyone else were too into whatever it was they were doing. I sighed and closed my eyes to open them again but this time I was seeing with my real eyes. My Xiezhi eyes. I guess you could say this was "cheating" when it came to investigating matters, since humans didn't have this ability, but my kind had used this ability since the dawn of time. What was I not seeing?
With my real eyes I continued to look around the apartment of the unfortunate victim still not able to find anything but something in me willed me to continue to seek out. The answer was here today! I could feel it in every cell in my body. The Xiezhi within me knew I would solve this case today! For a brief moment I began to wonder why I hadn't received a call from Feorie yet. I mean, she did say she would call me, unless she decided not to and who could blame her. I told her that she scared me. What kind of idiot says that to the woman that they care about? But it was the truth, something about her scared me and the way I felt about her scared me too.
But I had to stay focused on the task at hand. Keep looking, just keep looking. The beast within me was stirring, I was getting closer to the clue and I knew it intuitively.
"Chief Wang" Timothy's voice came up behind me.
I switched back to my human eyes before turning to face him, "Yes, You guys find anything new?".
"No not yet, same as before unfortunately. We're gonna prep to get the body out of here and try to wrap up the crime scene. I'm about to leave now, you gonna head back to the office?" Timothy asked.
