3 weeks later...
One thing that irked me was being late. I never did it intentionally, but sometimes it just ended up happening. Brinn and her family left a few weeks ago, due to some pack related issues. I had gotten so used to having dinner with them that I was going to miss them. As horrible as it sounded, I much rather have dinner with his family than the pack. I had already received some dirty looks from members every now and then. It had to do with the pack I came from, something I couldn't change. I was starting to wonder why the two packs were enemies to begin with. No one had that much hatred for no reason.
I knew eventually I would have to face everyone. From what Esther told me, people began questioning Owen at the last dinner. They wanted to meet their alpha female, but I wasn't an alpha. I was just...me. Who was I to lead people when I was just a follower myself? I tried my best to always do what I was told, and when I didn't I would feel horrible about it for weeks. It was an ongoing cycle that never seemed to end.
And yet here I am, ten minutes late rushing to my first period class. Between my alarm not going off and leaving my medicine at home, which I was low on, today was just not my day. As soon as I opened the door into my first period Economics class, all eyes landed on me.
Mrs. Sharp stopped from writing on the dry erase board and narrowed her eyes. "You're late Lisowski, and you know I don't tolerate tardiness." I gulped and nodded slowly. "I-I-I'm sorry it won't happen again."
She shook her head and continued writing on the board, so I took that as my cue to take my seat. I avoided all the stares and took my usual seat next to Esther. She shot me a smile then went back to taking notes.
Mrs. Sharp went to her desk to write something down while I got situated by pulling out my notebook and pencil. After she finished scribbling something down on a pink slip, she walked towards me and placed it on my desk. I stared at her back as she walked back to the front, then at Esther. She shrugged her shoulders and gestured for me to read it.
I didn't know what it was, but I was sure it couldn't be anything good. My eyes went wide as I read the note, 2 hour detention! I couldn't believe this, I had never had detention in my entire life. I ran my hand over my face and sighed, this was a mess.
My attention was drawn back to the front as Mrs. Sharp announced she would be quizzing us on the chapter we had for homework last night. The whole class groaned in annoyance. Senioritis was real, it was towards the end of the year and most seniors had given up a few months ago. "Define inflation..." Her eyes scanned the room before they landed on mine.
I freaking knew it!
"Parmus." She said with a smile. She expected me to be caught off guard and not know the answer. Sadly for her, I took my education very seriously and studied the night before. "An increase in the overall level of prices for goods." My lips twitched into a smirk as she stayed silent for a few seconds, searching for a flaw in my answer.
She cleared her throat. "That's correct." Esther and I shared a look before a small smile appeared on the both of our faces.
At the end of the quiz, Mrs. Sharp brought her chair in front of the room then sat. "Okay listen, you guys are going to be graduating soon. Everyone in these advanced classes is put here because they want to pursue a career that requires them to go to college outside of the pack. I get that you're tired of school, but you have to push through." Everyone's eyes were focused on her at this point. This was the first time I had heard her sound genuine, it was a nice change.
"If you guys think this is hard, just wait until you get to college. You're going to be on your own with no support from your family or your pack. Half of you won't make it, it will become too much and you'll be right back here in a matter of months. I want you all to prove me wrong." The bell rung, causing everyone to began packing up their things.
