Sakurako Yamaguchi was eight.
~~~
The ghoul's kagune pierced through the boy's throat, killing him instantly. Sakurako gasped involuntarily. Watching from a safe distance, some of her friends started crying. So this was a ghoul attack. She stared open-mouthed as the monster devoured the child. The. Ghoul. Was. Eating. A. kid. How horrible! And there was another ghoul with him. Two ghouls eating a little boy. Suddenly, figures clad in grey CCG uniforms and amour arrived. Without hesitation, one of them stabbed the ghoul with his weapon. Blood spurted from the wound, as the ghoul struggled to fight back. Hopelessly outnumbered, the two ghouls were soon subdued and taken away from the scene.~~~
They did this every year to the eight-year olds. To drill in the lesson that ghouls were evil beings who attacked innocents, that it was important for them to train and join the CCG when they reached the age.
Shivering from fear and shock, the children returned to the Sunlit Garden to continue their strict training that would prepare them to enter the CCG Academy, and, eventually, become Ghoul Investigators.
Sakurako didn't exactly like the Sunlit Garden. On the day she was born, she had been taken away from her mother and raised together with the other children her age. Actually, that wasn't even her real mother. Just like all the other half human soldiers, she had been created in a test tube using the genes of a human and a ghoul, then implanted into a woman's womb. There were even people who were specially used for this purpose. Usually, it was the full ghoul or full human girls. They were known as "vessels". According to Sakurako's friend Yui, who would become a vessel when she grew up, all they did was give birth to children. One a year, starting when they were 18 until they turned 35. Sakurako couldn't imagine the horror.
The half humans learnt fighting, quinque usage and went through horrible physical training which no child should have to face. There were classroom lesson too - boring lectures about the importance of eradicating ghouls and, of course, language, math and science classes which normal children had.
However much she disliked the Sunlit Garden, there was nothing Sakurako could do. This was her only home and at least she had food and a place to sleep here.
