A soft buzz echoed through a large cavern, breaking the tranquility.

Quite a shame. You were considering going back to sleep... but maybe whatever was causing your head to throb might have woken you up again, anyway. Another buzz, and a quiet groan. Sighing, you opened your eyes, and sat up slowly.

Then, you covered your mouth with a strangled gasp.

Where am I...?!

Huge, bettle-black eyes stared down at you coldly, an even larger maw snarling at you. You and everyone that you'd known had heard of this creature...

Trico...

The furry beast held your gaze with a curious expression, then eventually closed his eyes in what was unmistakably pain. When he shuffled, you saw that Trico was trussed up in rusted chains, and a..

Suddenly, you felt a wave of pity for him.

Whoever had left you in here with Trico had put some sort of muzzle on his head, and left two spears in his side. It's one thing to capture, you thought, and another to taunt and torment.

Looking up again, you noticed Trico gazing wistfully at some silver colored barrels that your tribe often used to store food. You started to wonder how long it had been since he'd eaten...

And then you realized why you were down here.

You were the only expendable tribe member. The spare healer, now... they'd initiated your apprentice to a full adult last night. Since you weren't needed anymore... the tribe had decided to send you down here. To feed him.

Trico made a saddened noise, setting his head on his talons.

-----------

"Hey, there... You must be hungry." Trico stared somewhat disbelievingly as you approached him, carrying a barrel. "I'm not sure whether or not you want to eat me, but we can try this, maybe?"

He snarled as you approached closer to his mouth, straining against the chains. Scared that Trico was going to hurt you, you stopped, and then rolled the barrel to him the rest of the way. Trico sniffed the container apprehensively, then cracked it open with his powerful canines.

While he was distracted, you pulled one of the spears out of his side.

The roar of agony that tore out of Trico made you wince in sympathy, but it was more important to get the spears out of him and get Trico calm. Who knew how long the two of you would be stuck down here for. He looked at you accusingly, and you dropped the spear, holding your hands out in a sort of calming way. Slowly, his fur- feathers, whatever- lay flat once again, and he nudged the remains of the barrel hopefully.

You sighed in relief, and told Trico that you were going to go fetch another barrel. When you got back, the creature regarded you in such a way that made you confused, his gaze shifting from you to the barrel. Again, when you got too close to his maw, Trico snarled.

"Fine, fine, I won't watch you eat."

As soon as you turned your back, he started cracking the barrel open, slurping up whatever was inside. Then he cooed, bumping your back playfully with his nose.

"You're very welcome," you giggled. "Do you want that other spear out?"

Lowering his head, Trico allowed you to climb onto his back, and you pulled out the pointed stick. Shrieking, he threw you off of his body, where you hit something long, hard, and cold sticking out of the ground.

You peered up at it, realizing it was a lever, and experimentally pulled.

A cacophony of noise greeted you, and you watched in awe as Trico pulled free, screaming in triumph. He pawed at the muzzle, lifting it off carelessly, and his wings fluttered in a happy sort of way.

Then, chirping, Trico nuzzled his cheek into your side. You pat him, slowly, a very rare emotion bubbling in your stomach.

Joy.

"L-let's..." You sniffed, pausing to wipe your nose before you hugged Trico's neck, the gargantuan creature definitely purring now. "Let's find a way out of here, okay, buddy?"

You had a feeling that you were never going to be able to get rid of him now.

And you were completely okay with that.
