You stared at a sign, telling you that you had reached Route Five. It took you a while to fully comprehend it...
Had it really been just a few short months ago that you'd left Nuvema Town, your home, on this quest? It felt so much longer. Somewhere along the way, you'd lost the concept of time- days were now measured in the exchange between night, twilight, and all hours in between. How much stronger could you help your Pokémon get before the sun rose? How long would it take for you to get a shiny new gym badge?
For quite a long moment, you stared down at your scratched hands- scars that hadn't been there until after you'd run into your first Purrloin, Robbie. Although you had taken a liking to him, it had taken quite a lot of blood, sweat, and tears for him to agree to join you. He eventually had respected your strength, bowed his head in permission, and after you'd caught him he now fought for you.
Right now, you didn't know how you felt.
Robbie- who had evolved into Liepard last evening- was now curled on your lap, purring softly. The two of you were out camping near the tall grass- hopefully the street performers wouldn't mind. You were patting his head and scribbling in your notebook, hoping that if you wrote down what had happened yesterday sleep would eventually come.
Pausing to dip your pen in the ink, you started to recount the meeting at the Ferris wheel.
-----------
N was waiting near that giant Pikachu model, evaluating the fake Pokémon somberly. Maybe not waiting for you, but waiting all the same. When he heard you approaching, he turned around, and smiled."(Y/N)," he greeted softly. "You're looking for Team Plasma, right? They ran into the amusement park. Come with me."
He'd taken your hand before you could protest and you had no choice but to walk with him. Feeling rather warm, you noticed how soft his hand was in yours, and couldn't quite decide whether or not you liked this particular feeling.
Your fingers tingled.
Both of you looked around the park, N appearing to be more amused than concerned. "I don't think they're here," he pointed out unnecessarily. "Maybe..." he looked up at a large Ferris wheel, smiling. "Maybe we can see them in this?"
You had found it very difficult to protest against the happy look in his gentle eyes, and asked if he would have rode it anyway. N shrugged somewhat sheepishly, still looking up at the ride with ill-hidden excitement.
"I really love Ferris wheels," N explained. "There's the circular motions... the mechanics... they're like the collections of elegant formulas, don't you think?"
He held the door open for you, practically bouncing on his heels. You giggled at his excitement and thanked him, and the both of you clamored into the Pokéball-shaped capsule.
You peered through the glass to gaze at the slowly lowering ground, chamomiles and bittersweets dotting the grass. The carriage was unsurprisingly tiny- N's shoulder was brushing against yours, and you awkwardly continued to stare out of the window instead of commenting.
N turned toward you, hesitance wavering through his voice. "(Y/N)... I need to tell you something."
"Of course. What is it?"
He put his hand on your cheek, the young man so close to you now that his soft green hair was ghosting along your skin. Heat rose in your cheeks, and he searched your eyes.
"I am the King of Team Plasma." Your heart sank, and he smiled gently in understanding. "You must be confused, and that's understandable... but it's a long story, and unfortunately I don't have the time to explain it all to you."
"Wh-why-" You didn't know how to finish.
N looked to the stars, as if he was asking them for help. "Ghetsis asked me to work with him to save the Pokémon... I couldn't refuse this offer. (Y/N), I know you've asked this to yourself too- are Pokémon truly happy with humans? I believe not."The both of you were silent for a while, pressed against each other in the solitariness of the carriage. "I wonder how many Pokémon are truly in this world, (Y/N)..."
-----------
After the carriage touched down, you'd bumped into the Team Plasma grunts you had been looking for in the first place, and N battled you to allow them to escape. By the end, you'd won; but just barely. On your knees, gasping, the colors that made up heliotropes and cyclamens danced in your vision. This all slowly ebbed away as he kneeled in front of you, unbearably close.
"You're quite strong, (Y/N)," he murmured, his tone light but true emotions hidden. "And I applaud you in your efforts. I know you never asked for this, and for that I am truly sorry."
He sighed, and for a moment, N looked bitter. Then that enigmatic smile was back, and he tilted up your chin to meet your eyes. "But I have a future that I must change, and for that future..."
N leaned in very close, whispering in your ear. "I will defeat Unova's Champion and become unbeatable, unlike any other. I will become strong enough to make every Trainer free their Pokémon- just try and stop me..." He saw the upset and confused look on you, and considered something.
"(Y/N), listen to me now. If you truly want to be together with Pokémon... Your only hope is to collect the Badges from each and every area in Unova and head for the Pokémon League."
He sighed, almost sounding bitter. "Perhaps it would have been different, (Y/N). If we're truly being honest with each other- I hope we are- sometimes I wish I'd never met you, and even then I hate myself for thinking that. For now though..." N caught your gaze and stopped speaking for a moment, glancing at your lips as if he even needed to ask...
The kiss was soft, warm. His and your caps kept getting in the way, and eventually were taken off entirely. N's hand lay on your cheek, the other simply holding one of your own.
Twenty-eight seconds- it felt like forever. It felt like no time at all. Your heart felt warm, but that may have been been because it would be hurting very badly soon. The spell he had on you slowly dissipated after N broke away, and there was a trace of sadness around him. Then he stood, leaving you dumbfounded on the ground. The young man began to walk away, and for a fleeting moment you wondered if he was going to look back...Then, N turned around, a tear tracing down his cheek. In a hollow tone, he told you this- "If your conviction isn't strong enough, you will never be able to defeat me."
And then, without another sound, he was gone.
-----------N stood and watched you, hidden among the trees. The notebook he's seen you writing in so many times is loosely held in your hands, and your breathing is even. The Liepard that accompanies you- Robbie, N recalled- is curled protectively around you, both you and the Pokémon in a deep sleep. He shook his head, chuckling softly. Only you would trust your Pokémon enough that you would drift off in the forest.
He stayed there for a while, drinking in this innocent image of you- hugging the overly large feline, your nose buried in Robbie's purple fur. N knew he would miss you, that this journey would hurt. Your enemy, the king of the organization whose only goal was to take away everything you knew and loved... it truly was the highest indignity to say he loved you, wasn't it?
The green-haired Trainer sighed, and approached you cautiously, not daring to make a sound. No matter what he was, N couldn't bring himself to disturb your peaceful demeanor, and he didn't want to be caught. He gently took the notebook out of your hands and tucked it into his bag- surely you wouldn't be too angry, if he wanted to hold onto this piece of you? Pausing to pat Robbie once, he adjusted your blanket so that it was fully covering your shoulders, then kissed your forehead tenderly.
"I'm sorry," he murmured softly. "No matter what, at the end of the line, I will always be waiting for you. Know that."
When you woke up your notebook was gone, and in its place was a far larger green one, stuffed to the brim with loose sheets of paper tucked in between. Curious, you opened the book, where a torn out picture greeted you.
It was a sketch of you walking with Robbie, bunches of lavender and pink carnations gracing the page in a clearly steady hand.
