The Smile

III - Under anesthesia

   The emergency service, as always, was a huge wave of comes and goes.

An electrifying rush, where tiredness is not permitted. Stretchers were forming a gigantic barrier, which prevents intern to pass correctly trough the hallway. The tiled floor was full of patients, families and engaged nurses. The whole atmosphere was colder than any other service because of the automatic door who kept open. The sound of ambulances' sirens hammered the arrival of others cases.

Apart from this gigantic flow, a small point stand aside, Dr Eva Mandell. Responsible of the new pediatric unit. Followed by two emergency doctors, Dr Jennifer Stilton, and Dr Audrey Martin. The three meet Dr Simon Lejeune, a neurosurgeon affiliated to the emergency.

"See you in a minute !"

While running, he puts on his white blouse.

"Audrey come with me ! Hurry !" Dr Stilton and Martin find their way two hallways later, near operating rooms.

Eva stays aside, near to Jacob and Isaac, interns.

"No time to gossip, come on, hurry up !"

Those ones leave their talk aside, to grab huge piles of records.

"What.. is all of this ?

- Today's work.

- All..?

- Yes. What did you expect ?"

The rhetorical question highlights Eva's mood : she was a hard-worker, not a joke.

Two floors upstairs, Dr Sara Katic arrives briskly, and accompanied by a patient. He was uneasy, with shaking hands and trembling lips. His walk was even more hesitating as they arrive in front of the glass door. Sara notices Sam. This one adresses her a grin, a sign of empathy, when seeing the patient in the chair.

Near Dr Katic's office, the assistant, Dr Gal Hedstater, helps rearranging the empty and used trays, after the two had finished the first procedure of the day. Dr Ryder salutes politely her cheerfulness and compliments her on her skills. Gal does the same, and insists on the quality of products, and tools.

They keep chatting for a while, before concluding on another subjects :

" ..Dr Darcy she always make sure to give us the best medicals goods.

-About her : she is kinda..

- Serious ? Yes. That's normal.

- Of course. I mean.. She is really strict and..

- Are you intimidated by her ?

- I am. Aren't you ?

- I guess. But, don't worry, if you work hard and follow the orders, she'll likes you.

- Yes."

They continued the talking, heading to the grand deposit hall.

There, Gal and Ryder meet Dr Dearing and Dr Wylde. Sam looked more annoyed than ever, she had endured a long discussion with Claire. Suddenly, she decides to end it :

" Oh please relax Claire..

- How ?! How could I..

- .. Stop yelling."

Gal tries not to smile in front of these two. They looked like an old odd couple arguing for nothing. Imagining these two as a couple made her raise an eyebrow.

"You keep complaining !

- But I..

- You shouldn't worry for such little things.
