Chapter Two. Lunch with Brett.
The first four periods went by pretty quick. It was lunch time and I was really hoping I'd find Mindy somewhere because I was not planning on sitting alone. As I entered the cafeteria, I spotted the tall red head that was my friend. She was a around 5'9 while I was around 5'3. I will tell you, that is considered average.
"Hey, Abs! Over here!" She practically screamed loud in for the whole cafeteria to hear.
I walked over to the table and Brett was sitting there also.
"Oh My God Brett! I haven't seen you all summer!" I ran to hug him. "How was Europe? Did you have fun? I saw the pictures! How have you been?"
"Woah, woah. Calm down, Abs. It was great. Yes, I had fun. It was beautiful and I am wonderful, thank you. How are you and Mason?" He asked as Mindy let out a little sigh.
I broke with Mason over the summer when Brett was in Europe. I didn't want to tell him because he would ask why, then get all brotherlike-protective and mad and that would just ruin his trip. But I guess I have to tell him now. Here it goes..
"I.. We.." I couldn't tell him. As much as I hated to admit it, I was not fully over what happened. We had been dating for 3 years and the impact was pretty hard.
"They broke up Brett." Mindy stepped in for me. I gave her a small smile saying thanks. She nodded back.
"WHAT! Why? Abs?"
"I was at the mall and I went to the ladies room. I- I saw him there. He was kissing some girl who looked like she just washed off the Jersey Shore." I told him.
"He cheated on you? That bastard. Where is he?!" He got up and both me and Mindy had to pull him down to make him sit down.
"Please, don't do anything. I haven't talked to him since and I really don't want things to get worse by bringing it up again." And as much as I wanted Brett to go over to Mason and beat him for his wrong doings, I didn't think it was the right thing to do.
"You know, I'm actually glad you broke up with that jerk. He was starting to get really controlling over you last year. I wanted to tell you but you liked him so much, I didn't want to ruin anything." He said matter-of-factly.
"I noticed it too. Everytime we wanted to go out with Brett, he would either make you cancel or he would come along himself." Mindy added her thoughts as well.
Now that I looked back and thought about it, he was really over protective. I guess I hadn't noticed it before because I thought him wanted to be with me all the time was because he enjoyed being with me. "I guess you guys are right. Let's talk about something else. What did you do in Europe?" And that's how Brett started talking, leaving the topic of Mason all forgotten.
After lunch I found out that Brett and I both had Calculus. Saying bye to Mindy, we both started heading towards our class. On the way there I saw a familiar face I really didn't want to see right now. I looked back to see if Brett saw him and when I turned around his face depicted only anger. I looked back towards the front and jumped back. He was standing right there.
"Hey, Gail." He said and I almost wanted to throw up at that nickname.
"Get away from me." I turned to go away but he caught hold of my hand.
"Didn't you hear her, Mason. Let her go. And walk away you son of a..." Brett began saying but I ripped my hand out of Mason's and pulled him away.
"I need to talk to you Gail. You never let me explain myself!" He pushed further.
Turning around I practically spat at him."What is there left to explain Mason? What you did hurt me and no matter what you say you can never redeem yourself."
"I'm still in love with you, Abigail. What I did was a mistake, I don't know what I was thinking. Everytime I look back to that day, I never find a good reason to justify what I did. It was a mistake. I realized what I had when I lost it. Just give me a chance to make it up to you Gail."
I couldn't respond to what Mason said. It was too much to take in. I knew I was never going to give him another chance again, but what he said about still loving me is what really shocked me. If he loved me he would have never gone out and cheated on me.
Seeing I wasn't going to respond anytime soon, Brett stepped in. "That's enough Mason. You've said what you wanted to say now leave her alone." Brett put one of his arm around my shoulder and led me away from him.
"Are you okay, Abs?" He asked sincerely.
"Yeah.." Was all I could say.
