The machine has risen out of the ground and is now looking at its surroundings. Everyone has calmed down for a moment to try and examine the machine, trying to find out what it is, where it came from, and what it is doing here. The man and his visitors are confused and look at the machine in confusion. It then activates something on its chest and sides, revealing speakers of sorts. A voice is heard from them, reminding the man and a few others of Ellen McClain as GLaDOS from Portal 2, but for some reason, it isn't either of them.
The voice announces what GLaDOS would normally say(but the Portal 2 references are scarce and refer to Steven Universe), and, as the machine's arms and blasters that are deploying are charging up, announces "the destruction protocol shall commence in 3, 2, 1." One of the blasters aims at a building with humans nearby and, immediately after the voice says one, destroys it, vaporizing the humans and clothes in the process and shaking the area, causing a panic among the witnesses, who run as far away from the machine as it can.
So far, a good number of them aren't so lucky. Sam, Joseph, Dave, Brian, and the man are of the only survivors, the other survivors going into hiding and getting as far away from the machine as they can while it and a similar but somewhat larger machine came out of the intersection between Walnut and Mooney. The man encounters odd visions that might display events of a series that he is familiar with, and discovers one being in the visions, who has white spiky hair, and something on his forehead.
He is reduced to a non-average state and takes the four with him to his house, where his family, excluding his sister, are. He tells them to pack their things and to take their belongings, and many other safety and food/drink supplies to take with them to Three Rivers. They and the four Standard Broadcast guys go to Three Rivers and stay with their relatives there as the rest of Visalia becomes rubble and ash.
The man tells everyone what happened in the downtown district, and turns on the news, the broadcast telling everyone about what was going on. The news shows the light beam that they recorded and slow it down to reveal a gem coming down. The man even tells everyone about his vision, then gains a thought and announces that they all should leave the town and go further into the Midwest before the machines arrive. He decides to contact his sister and relatives in Sacramento, telling them what's going on, and to leave the county while they still can.
They all pack again, and ride in their automobiles, going to the easternmost city in California that has an airport. At the same time as Visalia is attacked, machines come along in New York, Los Angeles, Sacramento, among other cities, including San Francisco. In the oceans, portals are formed, letting more machines come out of them. As the downtown districts of New York and San Francisco are destroyed, the machines coming out of the underwater portals attack the Golden Gate and Brooklyn Bridges, mimicking the first Kaiju attack from Pacific Rim. The alien invasion as it looks like is unlike any other, but who are the aliens? Some people plan to stop this war for good.

FanfictionI've been thinking about the scene from Spielberg's 2005 adaptation of H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds that introduced the audience to the first Tripod to appear in the film, Pacific Rim, and my two "favorite" franchises. I plan to get it out.
