Chapter Six: Together Or Nah

We still had another hour and a half until my luggage was supposed to come in. All that I could think about was what Chase had said to me,

"Mallory! We get to spend summer together like I planned for us! We can go back to how it was a month ago."

After he said that, I used the excuse of being thirsty so I ran to the nearest Orange Julius and got a strawberry smoothie.

I realized running away from him might not have been the best thing to do, so I walked back and sat down by where he was currently sitting.

"Mallory, if you don't want to get back together, just say it. I won't stay if you don't want me to," he said, his voice much sadder than a few minutes ago.

I start to say, "No, I want you to stay it's just-"

"I'm only going to stay if you actually think there's a chance of us getting back together this summer," he says, looking me right in the eyes. He doesn't look away for a few minutes, that is until a few teenage girls walk by and his eyes flicker to the side to look at them.

He just asked if we'd be able to get back together, and then he's checking other girls out?! What's wrong with him?!

Not if you keep looking at other girls like that...

I grabbed his chin and turned his attention towards me. "Stay. But I won't promise you anything if you keep acting interested in other girls too." I sipped my smoothie and looked up at him, waiting for a response.

"Fine. I'll quit it, but you have to make an effort to try hanging out with me," he said, sensing the annoyance in my words said a minute ago.

Possibly get back together with Chase? Hang out with him? What good reasons would I have to not say yes?!

Oh yeah. Just a few days ago Grace and I were throwing darts at a picture of his face on a dart board. That's one setback....

"Okay, I will," I say without even thinking about what my mind just said.

Instantly, his whole attitude brightens and he forgets about any of the negative emotions on his face a second ago left behind.

"Let's play a game," he suggests. "Ooh. What kind of game?" "One I just made up called 'Together Or Nah,'" he says, "I'll say something I could to do you to try and get us back together and you say 'together' if it would work on you and 'or nah' if it wouldn't." "This seems cheesy," I mutter before saying, "Ok. I'll play, only because I have nothing better to do."

"Yay! Ok. I'm just going to name some things off, and you'll respond. Ok?" he says. "Ok Chase. Just go already before I change my mind."

"If I made you a romantic candle dinner," he says. I respond with "Together."

He smiles and then says, "A midnight trip to McDonald's for shakes." "Tempting, but or nah. It'd have to be more than just shakes to get me to McDonald's in actual clothes at midnight."

"Are you kidding me? Have you seen some of the people who go there late at night? One time my mom said when I was younger I insisted on having a HappyMeal at two in the morning so she drove to the nearest one and when she got inside she saw somebody in their pajamas and slippers that had curlers in their hair. Who wears curlers to a fast food restaurant?!" we both burst out laughing and then he asks the next question,

"Playing video games and eating pizza in my room." I remembered his house, how big it was, and then I remembered his extremely comfortable bed, from our little cuddle session, when we watched movies together on the weekends.

"TOGETHER," I blurted out before realizing the words left my mouth. He smile turns brighter and he says, "I know what we're doing when we get back before school starts." I blush and look away.

"Mals, why do you keep hiding from me when you blush? I already told you before, it's adorable and I'd rather see that compared to your sweatshirt hood," he says, his smile finally vanished and replaced by a small frown.

I start to say, "I know, it's just that-" "Mallory. I want us to be close again. I want to be able to hang out with you, and not feel bad because deep down, I still love you. I want you to feel what I feel towards you, towards me. I want everything in the world for us to be together again. I wish that you could see that you really belong with me, and not some other guy you'd meet here in Florida. I want us back together so I can call you mine and I can call me your's. I know this is weird, but do you think we could pick up where we left off together? It hasn't been that long and I really want it to be the same again. I don't know about you though. Do you feel the same?" he says, looking at me expectantly for an answer.

"Chase, I can't just say what I'm not feeling, when I have no idea what I do feel. I do miss you, but I don't know if I miss being your friend or more than that. I'd love for things to go back to how they were, but I'm just afraid of what could happen if I don't feel that way about you yet. It could damage our relationship as friends and that's a risk I'm not willing to take right now. However, if you asked me to be your best friend again, there's no way I would decline that offer."

"Okay, so you want to take things slow and see how fate plays it out? So I'm being friend-zoned. Great. Best friend necklaces and matching t-shirts with our faces on them, here I, I mean we, come," he says sadly, his head hanging down. "Quit being such a drama queen," I say, playfully nudging his elbow.

"I'm not a drama queen!" he squealed at the top of his lungs. "Chase! Be quiet!" I whispered loudly, trying not to laugh at the many weird glances and stares we were now getting due to his tantrum.

"Don't tell me what to do! I have my own head and brain, lady!" he says this time, making a face too. Now I can't help myself and I start laughing really hard. I snort too and sound like a wild donkey, which causes Chase to laugh with me. He decided not to stop the craziness and pulled my head to his lap and started tickling my stomach. As I laughed my head off, he laughed too and kept tickling away, switching from my stomach to my neck and then eventually tickling just about everywhere he could think of that would possibly be ticklish.

By now we've ignored the looks given to us by many strangers passing by. However, we also happened to miss the employee patiently waiting next to Chase's suitcase as he kept tickling away. I heard somebody clear their throat and grabbed Chase's hands causing him to stop and look up.

"Sorry to interrupt but your suitcase is finally here. Please follow me, so you can retrieve it and be on your way," they say to me. It's a teenage girl that seems to be in her late teen years.

Chase helped me up and we followed the employee to a nearby service counter. "Here's your bag. Sorry about the mix-up. Here's a voucher for a free drink at any of the Snack Bars," she says sliding me a little coupon. Then as I turn and start to walk away I see and hear her slide another piece of paper to Chase and she whispers, "And here's in case you two don't work out," adding a flirtatious smile at the end.

"He won't be needing that," I say turning around and tearing it up into little bits. "Why is that?" they both say. "Be-because this" I say and I grab Chase and pull him into a kiss. I would say that's the last part of me trying to get rid of this little boy-snatcher thing, but Chase understands and kisses me back.

After we pull away and the other girl stomps off, I kiss him softly on the cheek, and Chase looks at me questioningly. "To make up for the past week," I say, grabbing my suitcase and heading for some chairs, suddenly feeling a little dizzy.
