For those who haven't read the Inheritance Cycle: This is an idea of the characters and what happened in the books. I've tried to include everything but if I missed anyone out or if you're still confused then let me know. It's only brief but I hope it helps.

Alagaësia- The land where Eragon and his dragon Saphira grew up and helped to defeat Galbatorix. The forest of Du Weldenvarden lies to the North, home to the elves. To the South is the Beor mountains where the dwarves dwell. In the centre is the Hadrak desert which is mostly uninhabited due to it's harsh conditions. In the West lies the Spine mountain range where there are human settlements, including the village of Carvahall where Eragon grew up and found Saphira's egg. Beyond the Spine is the coastline and the island of Vroengard where Eragon and Saphira venture to during Inheritance and discover the Vault of Souls where hundreds of Eldunarí and a number of dragons have been hidden from Galbatorix's clutches for many years.

Important Characters:

Eragon: The main protagonist, a farm boy and the first Dragon Rider since the fall. The fate of Alagaësia rested on him and his Dragon's hands. After defeating Galbatorix, he left Alagaësia with Saphira to discover the world beyond, taking the Eldunarí (dragon hearts) and the dragon eggs from Vroengard with him.

Saphira: Eragon's sapphire blue, female dragon and best friend. She is sent to Brom at the start of the first book by Arya, who is then captured by the Ra'zac. Eragon finds her egg while hunting in the spine and Saphira hatches for him. Together they learn magic, save Arya and ultimately defeat Galbatorix with the help of their friends and allies. At the end of the Inheritance Cycle, she becomes close with Fírnen, Arya's dragon and at the end of the Inheritance Cycle, the two of them become mates before Eragon and Saphira set off on their journey beyond Alagaësia.

Roran: Eragon's cousin and close friend, has made a name for himself as Roran Stronghammer for his bravery and courage in battle when he joins the Varden. Risks his life to save the life of Katrina, his wife and then stays to help the Varden, eventually becoming the Lord of Palancar Valley where he and Eragon grew up on a farm.

Brom: Storyteller of Carvahall, former Dragon Rider (his dragon was also called Saphira); Eragon's first mentor and trainer, he was killed by the Ra'zac while protecting Eragon. He is Eragon's father, although Eragon only discovers this after Brom dies.

Murtagh: Son of Morzan, first of the Forsworn (betrayers of the Dragon Riders); becomes a good friend of Eragon and travels with him to the Varden's hideout in the Beor Mountains. Saves Eragon's life several times. Later Galbatorix forces him to become the first Dragon Rider (with his red dragon, Thorn) under Galbatorix's rule since the Forsworn were all killed. He manages to free himself from Galbatorix's bonds after falling in love with Nasuada and helps Eragon defeat the evil king. Afterwards however, he leaves Alagaësia with Thorn to better his ways after all the worng he did during the war. Murtagh is Eragon's half brother, they had the same mother.

Arya: Elf Queen, former Princess, daughter of former queen Islanzadí, she is saved by Eragon and Saphira from the clutches of Galbatorix and Durza in Eragon. Accompanies Eragon in most of his missions and they become close friends. She becomes a dragon rider at the end of Inheritance when the green Dragon egg previously possessed by Galbatorix hatches for her.

Fírnen: Arya's dragon. Afer hatching, Arya helps bring him up and train him with the help of Orimis and Glaedr. He becomes Saphira's mate at the end of Inheritance and eagerly awaits thier return to Alagaësia.

Galbatorix: Evil king of Alagaësia, who ruled for over 100 years, most powerful rider ever due to his control over the Eldunarí of many dragons. His magically corrupted black dragon is called Shruikan and he possesed what were thought to be the last three dragon eggs in existance, one blue, (hatches to become Saphira) one red, (later hatches to become Thorn) and one green (hatches to become Fírnen) but Saphira's egg is stolen from him by Arya then hatches to Eragon. He was killed by Eragon at the end of the Inheritance Cycle and after his defeat, the green egg is taken to Du Weldenvarden by the elves.

Orik: The king of the dwarves. Also a friend and foster brother of Eragon.

Orimis: An ancient elf Dragon Rider who has hidden in the depths of Ellesméra, Eragon's second and more significant mentor, he also taught Morzan and Brom. He is killed by Murtagh while Galbatorix controls him. His dragon is called Glaedr.

Glaedr: Oromis's massive gold dragon, right front paw lost in battle, he is killed by Thorn, but only after biting off a good part of Thorn's tail. His soul lives on in his heart of hearts, the Eldunarí, which is in Eragon's possession.

Nasuada: Leader of the Varden when they were rebelling against Galbatorix. She became High Queen of Alagaesia after Galbatorix's fall.

Elva: When she was a baby, her carer, Greta asked Eragon to bless her. However, at the time, he was inexperienced with magic and pronnounced the spell wrong so instead he cursed her to feel the pain of those around her who were suffering; the curse also turned her eyes a strange lilac colour. She helps the Varden with her power although she is only a young girl. After defeating Galbatorix, Eragon had the power to cure her of her curse but she declines, telling him that it has become a part of her.

Angela: A herbalist who helps in the war against Galbatorix. She is a mysterious woman with a gift in the art of magic. At the end of Inheritance, she offers to look after Elva.
