1. bowing- if you are planning on going to japan, manners is one of the most important things you have to learn. japanese people are normally very private and don't tend to like body contact of any sort. expect to bow a lot in japan because it's a very respectful and simple gesture you can show towards others.
2. taking off shoes at homes- if you were raised in an asian household, you are most likely familiar with this one. if not, the explanation for this is that we like our homes to be clean and tidy all the time. shoes carry stuff you've stepped on outside [ rubbish, dirt and god forbid gum (*'Д`*) ], into the home, making it dirty so whenever you go home [ or someone else's ], please take off your shoes !!
3. respect elders !!- respecting elders is common sense in japan. though, they don't mind informal talking [ friends ] as much if they are 1-2 years older or younger as koreans do, but if they are old enough to be your parent or a grandparent, please show respect as they are getting weak and frail !!
4. business cards- perhaps in your country, you don't care that much about business cards, you know, the ones in stacks in shops for promotional reasons ! i have to admit, when i was younger, i always take them and throw them around like ninja stars but please never ever do that in japan, especially when it's exchanged with you from another person !! it's extremely disrespectful and would be frowned upon if seen by others. take it with gratitude and look at it thoroughly, carry it in a bag, purse or wallet, don't put it in your butt pocket, it'll seem rude !!
5. chopsticks- this is a well-known fact about asian culture [ mainly in china, japan and korea ]. putting chopsticks, upright in a bowl of food [ mainly rice ] is seen as an offering to deceased people which isn't that good of a thought when trying to eat. please be considerate about others around you when eating together >~<
