“Tell me.” Daphne begged on, ever since I told her I had a major crush on this guy.
“Why are you so curious?” I laughed, trying to get her to let it go.
“Maybe because my best friend is practically in love with some boy by the sounds of it, and I’m a very observant and curious person!” She shrieked. “Why can’t you just tell me?”
“Because this is just phase, I’ll forget about him soon and it’ll be just a blur.” I tried convincing myself, but I knew in my heart that wasn’t true.
“Psh, lies. All kinds of lies. All this week and last, you wouldn’t shut up about him.” Daphne just wouldn’t let up, and it was getting harder and harder to not spill about him.
“Fine Daphne, okay? I’ll tell you, but you have to promise to keep it between the two of us.” I pointed my finger in her face, looking deep into her eyes.
“Yes Ally, just speak. Go.” She pushed her fingers forward, letting me know to go ahead.
“I like Nate.” I just let the words fall out of my mouth, like vomit, uncontrollably. Her eyes focused in on mine, beginning to squint.
“Nate, as in our best friend’s boyfriend Nate?” She questioned, shaking her head.
“No, the Nate I’ve never talked to.” My nerves kicking my sarcasm in gear, but Daphne didn’t smile.
“Ally..I don’t know how to tell you this, but he’s practically in love with Haley. Like deeply, passionately.” She said, holding her arms up level to her face and pouting her lips in a kissing position. Trying to make her statement less serious, and hurtful.
“I know, why do you think I just want it to be a phase! The worst part is, I don’t think it is. I’ve liked him for too long now for it just to be a small crush.” I sighed, it was hopeless. But I was thankful to finally be able to tell someone other than my family or worse, my mom.
“Well, this will just stay between us. And if anything surfaces with you and Nate, Haley will be on high alert. But I’m sure if they were to break up, she would have no issue finding another guy to drool over.” We laughed together, and she flipped her rosey red hair in the non existent wind. Once the bell rang, I knew we were in trouble. Crap, my next class is with the two love birds - all by myself.
“Okay class, settle down.” Ms. Applegate said calmly, “I said settle down!” There was the real Ms. Applegate coming out, let’s just say you could always tell what time of the month is was with her..
Man seeing them together, being cuddly is killing me. Okay, stop touching his chest like that. Okay, now stop kissing her neck. Or not, that works too. The back of my neck was beginning to itch, showing my annoyance. “Nate, Haley. Please, for one second of the day separate from each other. I know, it’ll be difficult but I’m sure you can manage.” Ms. Applegate finally separated the two, and I was thankful for her decision. I smiled down at my desk, and sighed.
“What are you smiling about?” Haley slammed her hand on my desk, but then rubbed it after. Nate looked over his shoulder, examining the situation, smiling and then turning back around to pay attention.
“I think we should pay at-”
“No Ally, you’ve been acting odd for too long now. Daphne and the other girls are always giggling at random times around me and Nathan, spit it out. Oh, I’m practically in love with your boyfriend and I can’t do absolutely anything about it. So turn the hell around so I can pay attention for once in this class without your annoying voice chatting away with me. If I were to have said that, she probably would’ve slapped me - so I knew better than that.
“I may like this guy, and I really wished I didn’t.” I faked a smile when I turned my attention to her.
“I’m sure you’re just overacting with this. Who he is? I can make sure he likes you back.” She lifted her head confidently in the air, it was true.
“No.” I said more quickly than intended.
“Don’t be a sower pus Ally, what’s the big deal?” She had no idea, I thought she was good enough with this stuff to tell by just the look on my face. Maybe even my heartbeat, with her expertise.
“Ally and Haley, would you care to share your conversation with the class. Maybe the principle is more suitable?” We shrunk down in our seats, and blushed. Nobody laughed except Nate, trying to not smile. Haley glared him down, and he turned his stare away from us. Ms.Applegate turned around, scribbling on the chalkboard again. I was very glad to have that interruption, and hopefully Haley would just forget about the whole thing. ‘We are talking after class, asap.’ A note said that Haley passed back to me. Great, Nate’s probably going to be there. She giggled at me, and I gave her a thumbs up. What can I say? She is my friend, I sort of have no choice anyway. This should be a fun next few weeks.
