I woke up the next morning, knowing I hurt Nathan and that was the worst feeling ever. I had to force myself to get up because it was getting close to time for school. Seeing Nate and Haley in the same room would probably be the most awkward thing ever, or I should say will be since I have a class with both of them. Which will be more awkward? Seeing Nate or Haley, let’s find out.
--
They both stared at me when I slowly walked into the doorway, Haley looked away quicker and Nate made me really feel it in my heart how much I hurt him by the way he was looking at me. I couldn’t take it anymore so I looked away from his gaze which made me feel in every place possible. By my luck this past weekend, the only seat available was behind Haley. I quietly sat down, and she turned around to look me in the eyes.
“Look, I know I overreacted.” Yeah, no kidding. “But I just wanted to apologize, for a lot of things. In retrospect, everything. I’m really already over Nate, I mean he didn’t mean enough to me for me to act in that way. So, I apologize. I’m going to talk to Nate after school to tell him the same thing. I really do hope everything works out for the two of you.” This apology from Haley was so unexpected I had no idea what to say, and I didn’t really think “Thank you” was enough.
“Well, I appreciate you saying that. I really do, but to be honest Nate and I aren’t even really dating at the moment..” It was awkward saying that to his ex, but I couldn’t lie and say we were doing pretty well because we weren’t at all.
“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.” She began to turn in her seat, but turned back. “He’s honestly really difficult to handle sometime, so if you have a short temper it might not work out.” Which is exactly what I have, and I hate knowing we really might not work out now. As class began, Haley occasionally talked to me and gave advice for Nate and my situation. It was like what happened never did, and we were friends like the old times and for once in quite awhile I felt relaxed. Nate looked at his desk, and unlike his usual smirk it was just a dreary frown. It gave me the hint that he really got no sleep last night, and I sort of wished I could say the same but I actually slept fairly well.
“Ms.Applegate?” The intercom abruptly came on.
“Yes?” She sighed, not liking the interruption.
“Could you excuse Ally Rhodes to the office for a few minutes?” Hearing my name on the intercom was such a random occurrence and I was scared of why I was being called down.
“Sure.” She pointed at me and then out the door. “Try to make it quick.” I nodded, and fastly walked out the door. Haley nodded at me, and Nate kept his head down towards his desk. I held my chest, shivering with nerves.
“Hello my girl.” It was shocking to see my father standing there in front of me.
“Wha- What are you doing here?” There was no possible way of hiding my shocked expression, I never thought I’d see the day where my dad was wanting to see me.
“Can we just talk for a few minutes?” My throat was blocked up, so I couldn’t even say “Okay” or “I have to hurry.” All that came out was just gibberish, making him laugh. I had his laugh, which made me smile and made my neck itch with anxiety. We walked towards a bench that was near the front entrance, and sat with quick breaths the only noise that could be heard.
“You-I-You go.” We both began at the same time, and it really made me know we had something else in common. Even though tons of people talk at the same time, I felt something different when we did that together.
“I’ll go.” My dad said, leaning forward to get his face level with mine. “I came here, because if I tried to call or go to your apartment you wouldn’t answer.” He sure wasn’t wrong about that. “So I just wanted to tell you a few things about the other day. I wasn’t going to yell at your mom, and I promise I’m not just saying that.” I stared at the floor, taking in the information. “It was a joke, since we’ve only had occasional fights every now and then. I know, stupid right? But your mother feels horrible, and if I knew you were there I would’ve acted completely differently because I wouldn’t want you to think your mother lied to you on the note.” So he did write it with her. Nate was right, just another reason for me to feel bad about what happened. “Your mother and I agreed to give you the money because we know how much you’ve wanted to live on your own, and we want to support you. Just know Ally, we love you. I know mum probably already told you that, and you’re getting tired of hearing it but it’s only because we mean it. So the last thing I want you to know before I go is that you are always welcome home and we love so very much. Call us whenever you think or want to. Love you my sweet, grown, Ally Elizabeth.” He kissed my forehead, and smoothed out my hair where he’d done it. It’s like he knew me just by him doing that action.
“I love you too Dad, and tell mom I’ll visit much more. I’ll swing by after school just prove it.” I smiled up at him, and was getting choked up just by my response.
“See you then kiddo.” He acted strong, but in our family we always hid what we really felt and I knew that. I smiled, and itched the back of my neck. Maybe we were going to be a normal family again..

The class had already ended by the time I returned, which meant lunch time. Haley, Daphne and an unfamiliar boy was sitting at our usual lunch table. I set my lunch down, and smiled at the unknown boy sitting across from Daphne and I. She shrugged her shoulders, not really sure how to explain while he was here.
“This is Ryan, he’s new here.” Haley introduced him.
“I’m not new?” The kid named Ryan spoke up, showing he wasn’t shy around us girls.
“Oh.” Haley said, embarrassed.
“You guys have just never noticed me, that’s why.” He huffed, looking to the side.
“Sorry, Ryan. We haven’t really had a need to keep an eye out for the boy population.” I said, being honest. Daphne had a long distance relationship and Haley obviously had Nate, and I liked him so I had no need to look.
“It’s okay, but I hear two of you are recently single.” He smiled at Haley and I.
“Ally’s not single.” Haley cut in, and I could tell if we weren’t careful we would be fighting for this guy just like with Nate. I didn’t want that to happen, but Ryan was pretty cute with his green eyes and crooked smile. I would even be up to say he’s cuter than Nate, which I never knew I’d think or say.
“It’s complicated.” I sighed, getting a strange look from Daphne and a nod from Ryan.
“Well it was nice meeting the three of you, Ally wanna talk later? After school?” Haley glared at me when she knew he liked me more than her and I bet that stung a bit, the second time around.
“Uh, sure.” I said shyly, I couldn’t resist at the fact that he possibly has feelings for me.
“What about Nate?” Haley slapped my arm once Ryan walked away from view.
“What about him?” Daphne asked, I remembered the last thing she knew was Nate was comforting me. Which meant the rest of our lunch time I wouldn’t be eating, I would be explaining. Everything.
