Chapter 10-Walk it off
I woke up the next morning, earlier then I should have. The sun was still working its way up the sky. I walked out of the tent and saw Kris lying on the table, her head on her arm fast asleep. I smiled, she did take naps. I got my blanket and draped it over her shoulders. I sat across from her, waiting for her to wake up, she woke up around noon. Right then I had found something called Cotton Candy and was eating it. It was very sweet and was pink, I didn’t like that part but I still ate it. I was hungry. “Oh, did I fall asleep?” she stretched out. “Yeah, you’re fine though I secured the perimeter.” I joked. She smiled and took a piece of my cotton candy. “So how long do you think until you go?” she asked me. “Probably today why?” I asked. “Because…I was thinking of joining you.” She smiled hopefully. “You don’t want to stay her and watch the circus?” I smiled. “No, I’m getting pretty bored.” She wiped her nose. I giggled a bit, “Okay. Dad won’t mind, Duke might but I really don’t pay attention when he’s yelling at me.” I joked again, she laughed.
Dad had agreed to let her come, of course Duke said nothing. I just guessed that was a second yes and took her with us. We started to jump the fence when I glanced at Kris; she was looking back at the park. “You okay Kris?” I asked as I landed on the other side of the fence. “Of course! Oh are we playing Spiderman?” she asked perking up. “We’re jumping a fence.” Duke answered for me. “Can we just say we’re playing Spiderman?” Kris joked. “No.” Duke growled. “Fine Mr. Angry face.” Kris frowned. “Come on Duke; let her say she’s playing Spiderman! She’s a clown she wants to joke around.” I whined. “I don’t this to take too long, if she’s messing around how am I going to get home?” Duke asked walking away. Kris stared at me through the fence, then at Dad as he opened the gate door. “Did you want to jump over or did you just not notice the door?” Dad asked holding the door for Kris. I didn’t say anything, I didn’t see the door.
Kris sang road songs while we walked down the street. “We’re not too far now, the next town has the purifier. Then you all can go home.” Dad nodded towards Duke, he looked up at my Dad and didn’t say anything. Kris strayed away from road songs and started singing Snow Patrol, “I don’t know where, confused about how as well, just know that these things will never change for us at all!” she sang. “Shut up.” Duke grumbled. Kris stomped on his foot and kept singing. “What was that for?” Duke snarled. “I will not be silenced!” Kris shouted then did a cartwheel in front of Dad. “Kris it’s best if you calm down. We might catch the attention of something.” Dad told her. Kris stood until I started to walk by her; she started to walk with me and started at the beginning of Chasing Cars. I smiled; I didn’t know why anyone would want to leave her. She seemed so full of life, why wouldn’t someone want that?

I watched them walk down the road, the new girl. How did she get there? I knew I couldn’t leave that girl alone for more than two days! Her hearts too big for her own good. No more than three people need to die, no this isn’t good. Not good at all. I turned to my friend, “You need we need to do something about this right?” I asked. She looked at me; she was picking a rock out of the mountain. “Huh?” she mumbled. I pointed at the clown, “Uh oh, how did that happen?” she asked. “I don’t know! Obviously I can’t trust Tara. She’s messed up the whole thing!” I whined. “Sorry.” My friend mumbled. “Wait, weren’t you supposed to stake out the circus?” I asked. She looked at me then there was a blank expression on her face. “Maybe…” she mumbled.
“Yes you were! What were you doing?”
“I was riding the rides okay? I thought you caught on by now that I shouldn’t be trusted to do anything!”
“I’m surrounded by idiots…”
“Wow thanks.”
“You’re welcome.”
