Chapter 14-In a World Beyond Controlling
Duke glared at me as I entered the room. “So, you two had a fight?” the Sheriff asked, who is he Dr. Phil? Neither of us said anything, he just looked at each other. “So, Tara I heard you got an assassin job is that right?” the Sheriff looked at his food. He invited everyone to dinner, Duke, Kris and I. Kris looked to uncomfortable to even be in the room. “Yes.” I grumbled. “Who’s your boss?” the Sheriff’s voice grew in volume. He was probably excited that I was talking. “Mr. Red.” I answered; Duke almost fell out of his seat, he grabbed onto the table to steady himself. “What?!” he boomed. “What you’re going to get mad at for that to?” I growled. “Do you even know who he is?” Duke demanded. “Do I need to? He pays well should I care?” I scoffed. “You’re an idiot!” Duke shouted. “That’s it!” I got up and pulled out my knife. “Hey! No need for violence!” the Sheriff stood up to. “I’m out!” Kris got up and started running, she ran into the door. She opened it and ran out screaming her head off. “How will I ever get that child…?” I sighed. “You want to fight? Fine, come at me.” Duke took out a combat knife. “Finally, I get to fight the man who led me.” I smiled, this will be fun.
“So? What’s that have to do with anything?” I looked at the table; the Sheriff was probably chasing Kris down the street. “We were together for so long, fought the whole way and now we’re fighting? After two years? About time.” I said. “You’re insane.” Duke lunged, I ducked and cut his arm, he didn’t care. “Maybe I am, Maybe I’m not. My choice.” I ran at him, he grabbed my arm and threw me at the wall, I hit it hard. “Ow.” I grumbled. I got up before Duke could stick me with that long knife, it stabbed into the wall. He pulled out another one, even longer then the last. He ran at me, I tripped him and he fell flat on his face. I kicked him onto his back, “That was really easy.” I laughed. “That’s what you think.” He grabbed my ankle and I fell, I kicked him in the face and tried to cut his throat, he cut my wrist when I tried. I dropped my knife and noticed I had a barrel in my face.
I slapped it away before the bullet hit me; I grabbed his gun and hit him in the nose with it. “No guns allowed.” I growled and picked up my knife. “Then you won’t need that.” Duke cut my belt that held my guns and ammo. “Hey that was worth a lot!” I whined, dodging his arm and stabbed him a little. He held his side and picked up his own knife. He kicked my shin and punched me in the face, I fell and he tried to stab me but I moved out of the way and jumped on his back. He monkey flipped me on the floor. He almost stomped on my head but I rolled out of the way, I ran at him fast he grabbed my wrist and my other arm, and then twisted them behind my back. “I won.” He said. “Not yet.” I smiled and kicked him where it hurts, he let me go but it barely affected him. I got my knife and ran at him, he moved and I skidded almost falling over.
He threw something at me; I looked and saw it was a bottle. “Really?” I grumbled. A wine glass almost hit my head, “What are you doing?” I growled. “Getting your attention.” Duke laughed. “This is all a game to you isnt it?” I folded my arms. “You can say that.” He smiled a bit. There is so much about this guy I have failed to know. I ran at him but he threw something else at me, I tried to dodge it and watched it fall, it was a chair. “What is wrong with you?” I turned and saw he was about to stab me, I grabbed his wrist and twisted it, he flipped and fell. “Where’d you learn that?” Duke asked surprised. “I taught myself!” I answered, almost stabbing his head but he moved and got to his feet quick. I couldn’t pull my knife out of the floor; I quickly straightened and pulled one out of my jacket, Duke tackled me and laughed a little. “You’re just covered in goodies aren’t you?” he asked and pulled out a match, lighting my jacket on fire. I quickly kicked him and got the jacket off.
“That’s not nice.” I growled. Cutting him again, this time on the other arm. I kicked him in the jaw and he fell. I finally claimed victory! I was ready to stab him. “You did learn a little when you were gone didn’t you?” Duke smiled a little. “I did.” I smiled and raised the knife, Duke didn’t do anything, he knew he was dead. I couldn’t do it, I dropped the knife. “What’s wrong with you? You got me. Kill me.” Duke told me. “I can’t.” I mumbled. “Why?” He asked, totally confused. “I don’t know, so many times I wanted to kill you but I can’t. I think I have a problem.” I thought about it. Duke pushed me over and we just sat there trying to figure it out. “Maybe you think of me as a friend.” Duke suggested. “That’s not possible.” I gasped. “Why else would you not want to kill me?” Duke asked. “Dang it. I won’t get my money.” I whimpered. “Money isnt anything.” Duke told me. “I guess not. What’s bad about Mr. Red?” I asked. “He runs a slave organization; it’s too big for its own good. He’s racist and if anyone gets in the way of his business they’re never seen again.” Duke told me. “Why don’t we just tell the government about it?” I asked. “He’s already paid them off not to do anything about it. He’s the richest man on the planet right now Tara, we can’t do anything about it.” Duke said. I thought then smiled, “Or can we?” Duke looked at me confused. “What are you thinking about?” he asked. “We could kill him.” I suggested still smiling. “I guess we could but it would be very hard, do you know his building is under very high alert?” Duke folded his arms. “It’s never stopped me.” I pointed out. “Fine.” Duke shrugged, we got up and I looked at my jacket. “You burned my jacket!” I growled. “It was ugly anyways.” He mumbled. “Ugh, you’re mean.” I whined. It was good to see Duke again.
“What?” The Sheriff looked at Duke and me. “You mean, you and Duke resolved your differences without me?” the Sheriff looked at us in disbelief. “Yeah, that’s exactly what happened.” I folded my arms. “Wow.” The Sheriff sighed. “Is that surprising?” I asked. “No…I just thought…never mind. So are you going to stay here?” Sheriff asked me. “No Duke and I are going to Germany.” I said. Then Kris popped her head out of the living room, if she had a tail it would be wagging. “Can I go? Can I can I can I? I promise I would break anything! Cross my heart and hope to never be a clown again!” Kris ran in the room and hugged me; she bound my arms in a hug and looked up at me innocently. “Okay.” I smiled back. “Oh god…” Duke grumbled. “Don’t worry Duke I’ll try not to be annoying.” Kris let go of me and hugged Duke. “Don’t worry about it. You’re annoying trying not to be annoying.” Duke pushed Kris away from him.
“Tara!”
“Huh?”
“Duke doesn’t like hugs!”
“You just found that out?”
“Why doesn’t he like hugs?”
“Probably because he’s more stubborn then a mule.”
Duke looked at me; I could tell he was glaring at me from behind his sunglasses. “I’m not stubborn.” He grumbled. “Yes you are.” Kris and I said in unison. Kris and I looked at each other and giggled a bit. Duke groaned and looked at the Sheriff, “Do you have anything to let us know before we leave?” Duke asked. “Yes. I have a plane.” The Sheriff got up from his desk and walked outside, it took us a while to realize that he said he owned a plane. It’s not common to own a plane, well, not common, more of not reality. No one has had a plane since the war. We walked outside to see a two person plane. “There are three of us.” I stated. Then I thought of something…I looked a Kris. “What?” she asked me. I smiled, it’ll definitely work.
“I hate this.” Duke growled. “Oh come on, it’s not like I made her sit on your head.” I smiled as I turned on the plane. I made Kris sit on Dukes lap. She was afraid of heights and she was hugging his neck with her eyes shut. “Why couldn’t I drive?” Duke grumbled. “Have you ever flown a plane?” I asked. “No…” Duke answered. “Theres your answer.” I smiled triumphantly. “But I know for a fact that you haven’t.” Duke retaliated. “Plane simulator.” I said simply. “You really have spent all your life learning haven’t you?” Duke asked. “No, I still had time for shooting class.” I answered happily. “Oh great you answered my question.” Duke sighed irritably. I got the plane in the air; I heard Kris scream and Duke started to yell at her to shut up, and me? I just giggled. I don’t know why, I guess I really did miss them. Why? I don’t know, I guess I just did. It was a nice feeling, listening to them yell at each other. I didn’t know why, to be honest it was creeping me out. It was creepy but so sweet. I wasn’t paying attention; I was close by Germany already. I could see it. It was exactly as I left it, dead. It was nice to know that I didn’t miss anything.
I landed in the middle of the road, no one really cared. I almost stepped out of the plane but I froze, I defied Mr. Red. I felt myself tremble, what should I be afraid of? I didn’t know why that scared me. I didn’t know what I was doing. I’m an assassin. I don’t make friends with other people but the people that pay me. Germany really does bring out the worst in me.
