Someone forgot to lock his cell apparently.
Murphy was holed up in his room so he sent me to school with Penn the next day for the fundraiser. Penn and his lacrosse friends were volunteering, Penn himself was in charge of the 50/50 having had the responsibility forced upon him by his coach as team captain. The event was being held in the school's gym, featuring some baskets for auction, a bake sale and Mary swears there is a kissing booth and George from the Football team and Ray of all people were manning it.
That only meant I wanted to stay as far away from it as possible.
Ray for obvious reasons and George because Penn hates him and George is apparently still VERY interested in me. It feels like such a long time ago that I kind of liked him, and an even longer time that I considered asking him out purely because I hated the thought of being alone. It was pretty flattering to have a guy that cute like me but, I'm happy with what I have now.
We parked outside the school, scoring a parking spot right by the entrance to the school. My grip on the dashboard tightened as Penn's clunker came to a screeching halt. My head banged back against the back against the seat once the car ceased to be in motion. Penn remained unfazed, used to his own erratic driving by this point, and unbuckled his seat belt.
It took me a few moments to steady myself before I did the same, "Ready Freddy?"
"I should be asking you that, I just have to show up with my pretty face." He posed, eliciting a laugh from both of us, "You're the one with equipment, do you have everything?"
"Probably?" I should probably double check before going in, we had time before the event started so we could always swing back home if necessary.
"Camera?"
"Check."
"Charged battery?"
I popped open the camera, "Check and check for a memory card."
"Spare memory cards?"
"Check."
"Flash?"
"Check."
"Whatever lens things you need."
"Check, check and checkmate." I closed up my camera bag and turned back to him, "Ready to rock this thing?"
"Always Noves."
We separated as soon as we entered the school. Penn was meeting up with his team and I wanted to walk around to get a feel of the event. The woman running it was Kris's guidance counselor, Ms. Peabody although she insisted all of her students call her 'Nancy' because she doesn't like her married name. She was my guidance counselor for all of five seconds until we realized she was only responsible for students A-F and my last name is Renier.
"Hey Ms-" I caught myself before I could finish, "I mean hi Nancy."
"Hello Nova, what can I do for you?" She was always so nice, she had a million things to do but she had her attention squarely on me as if I were the only one.
"I'm covering this event for the Advocate," I explained as her eyes lit up, "I was hoping you could give me a schedule of all the events? It looks like you guys have a lot going on and I'd hate to miss anything."
"Do you think it's possible for you to send a few to me for the school?" She asked.
I nodded, "I'll text my editor and see."
"Thank you so much sweetie! Here you go," She handed me a small flyer, "Have a great night Nova and I hope you will enjoy the fundraiser, we've all been working so hard to put something nice together on such short notice. I love that everyone in Belhurst rallies together in times of need."

Superheroes Suck
FantasyNova was never really fond of superheroes. From their capes to the idea that a woman could serve as little more than a device to further the endless conflict of good and evil, you have to admit she's got a solid argument. It's a bit ironic that she...
