Luke's POV

Wednesday at school was awful for me and Ashton both. He had a rough day back and we were both extremely nervous for the show tonight. Ashton's wrists were healed enough for him to play but it was the first time we were playing in front of anyone. We hopped into Ashton's truck after school and he looked close to tears.

"Ashton what's wrong?" I asked and he flinched at my words, obviously startled.

"I just feel like everyone knew why I was out of school for two days. Like everyone was staring at my wrists the whole damn day." He said with a tear escaping.

"They had no idea Ashton, no one even said anything." I said and Ashton tensed even more.

"I just feel like they all know how fucked up I am!" He shouted and this time it was me who was flinching.

"They don't know a thing Ashton and you aren't fucked up." I said and he looked at me with tear-filled eyes.

"I love you." He whispered.

"I love you too." I whispered back and gave him a peck on the cheek.

"I'm sorry, I'm just really paranoid after everything that happened." He sniffled and put the truck in reverse.

"I know." I said feeling partially guilty at what my mom did.

"Don't blame yourself." He said and I turned to look at him. He knows me too well.

"How could I not?" I said with a small voice.

"How could you?" He argued.

"Because what my mom did was terrible and I shouldn't have reacted like that." I explained and he nodded.

"You actually reacted better than I expected." He said and looked out his window.

"I'm sorry." I blurted out.

"You shouldn't be." He said and I looked out my own window. "Hey." He said and his hand reached out to grab mine.

"What?" I asked and looked from our hands to his face.

"We have a gig tonight!" He smiled with dimples.

"I know I'm so damn nervous." I admitted.

"Me too but it's gonna be fucking awesome!" He yelled out and I laughed at him.

Even in the dark Ashton seems to shine.

...

We go on in five minutes, five minutes. I can't breathe and I'm pretty sure in gonna throw up. We've decided to play Out Of My Limit, a cover of I Miss You by Blink-182 and a song we've been working on called Beside You. A pretty short set list but that's really all we had time for and I was thankful we got that. The lyrics of all three songs have been racing through my head since we arrived a the club.

I didn't think it was humanly possible for anyone to be this nervous. Ashton's been tapping his drumsticks against his legs for the past 15 minutes, trying to get his timing down. The way he's chewing on his lip is a sure sign that he's nervous too. Calum bounced over to me and put both hands on my shoulders from behind.

"Nervous Lukey?" He asked and I nodded.

"Yes." I gulped.

"Dont be, there is like twelve people here." Calum teased and took his place up on the small stage. Michael was already up there in front of his mic stand leaving Ashton and I alone.

"I don't think I can do this Luke. What if I mess up?" Ashton's worried eyes searched my face for some kind of reassurance.

"You'll do great Ashton I just know it." I said and pulled him up behind me on stage. Once my feet were planted in front of my own mic stand, all the nerves seemed to evaporate.

Ashton gave us our cues and we started straight into Out Of My Limit. Even though there were only twelve people I gazed through the bright lights to see that those twelve people were enjoying our music. We sounded amazing and I knew the other boys felt the same way. The first two songs went off without a hitch and it was time for a quick intro from me. I took a deep breath and spoke into the mic.

"Hello everyone, thanks for listening. My name is Luke." I said and turned to Calum.

"I'm Calum."

"I'm Michael."

"I'm Ashton."

"And we are 5 Seconds of Summer. We have one more song for you guys. It's an original we've been working on, this is Beside You." I rambled and we started to play.

Calum sang his party perfectly and then it was my turn.

When we both fall asleep

Underneath the same sky

To the beat of our hearts at the same time

So close but so far away

I sang and the music picked up pace. With the chorus we got even better than the verse and the song was instantly a crowd favorite. I'm so glad we got it perfected so we could perform it. I loved the song and Calum did a good job finishing up the lyrics.

Our first show couldn't have gone any better. It was now a possibility we could make something of this band. The owner asked us back next Friday night for a small battle of the bands thing and we were all excited. This could mean big things.

...

We all said our goodbyes in Ashton's driveway and I hurried into my house before I broke the midnight curfew that my mom sat for me tonight. We haven't spoken much since Saturday and I'm totally fine with that. I hated what she did to Ashton.

I was walking past the dining room table when I noticed a white envelope. I picked it up to see it had my name addressed on it. I continued on my way to my room to open the letter. It was an acceptance to a week long trip to New York for a scholars convention. I was hardly a scholar but my mom signed me up for all these damn trips.

New York City. For a whole week. Doing all kinds of fun activities and getting away from my mother, sounds like just what I need. But what about Ashton?

The more I read the more interesting the trip sounded but the more I got discouraged. I would leave the day after Christmas and wouldn't be back until the day after New Years. What about the holidays with my family and friends? But this could be a once in a lifetime opportunity for me.

I flopped onto my bed with a sigh. Everything was so back and forth lately. I needed to sleep for weeks if only that were possible.

If only New York wasn't so far away.

I'm sorry this is the worst thing ever...
And it's short

I think I'm going to take the day off tomorrow to think things through.
