As completely cliche as it sounds, the Salvatore brothers had a family member that they had not seen in over a century. She wasn't their sister, she was their cousin. Only a few months younger than Stefan, she practically was their sister.
On that night in 1864, she was forced to watch as her cousins bled out in front of her. Her sobs were loud and her uncle took her back to his house much to her protests. After a few weeks, she grew more fragile. Any member of her family that she had was now gone.
Fortunately for her, she met a new friend by the name of Lincoln Tyler. He cared deeply for her and he could still see the lingering hurt in his eyes. So he cast a spell and put the girl into a sleep, one that she would not wake up from until a special trigger caused it. That trigger being the tears of the ones who love her that cry when they think of her memories.
Fast forward one hundred years and her eyes fly open and she's met with an entirely new town. It's as if something is controlling her as she reaches a large house that seemed somewhat familiar to her. When she knocked, she knew why.
The boys were vampires, she was simply a human. Her fragility as well as her kind and forgiving nature was constantly a problem for her especially when an original hybrid comes into town. No matter how much danger he brings, she finds herself giving into his words every time.
She was simply too naive for her own good but he wasn't looking to take advantage of that. He simply wanted to make her happy.
