"I saw you the other day, you were crying whilst everyone around you was smiling."
Another Salvatore comes to Mystic Falls but she is not their sister but their cousin.
She was simply a family girl in the 1800s when her life turned into a nightmare...

The sky was dark as she ran though the trees. The branches looked like claws reaching out for her. Her heart pounded as she tried to push herself to go further.
The town of Mystic Falls had been on a vampire hunt for awhile, and now she feared she had put the lives of the two most important to her in danger.
She never wanted them to get hurt. She just wanted them safe and away from her.
Without their knowledge, she had pinned them against one another. Manipulated them to her own advantage. At first, she had been welcoming but the more she observed the more she saw underneath her facade. But there was nothing she could do except watch as she came in and tore apart her home, her life. She was outmatched.
So when she heard of the council looking for vampires, she saw an opportunity. Her uncle had taken her word and they were able to expose the vampire in their lives. The council had taken her away and she thought it was over.
It wasn't till she noticed her two cousins sneaking behind the lynch mob. Once again she told her uncle who left her in a haste. Too deep in her thoughts, she didn't notice him grabbing his rifle before he left.
A part of her told her that something bad was going to happen. Unsure what it was, she couldn't decide whether to stay put or find them herself.
Following her instincts, she picked up her skirt and bolted out the door. Now here she was in the dark, hoping to spot any sign of her family. Her hope running thin as time passed.
Her movements halted when she heard the gunshot. Her heart dropped as she thought of the possibilities. As quickly as possible, she made her way over to where it emerged from.
But she was not ready for the sight. She saw a person hunched over another with a body not far off. The person got up and grabbed a gun from the ground but didn't get a chance to fire as the sound echoed around her.
In that moment, it felt like all her breath left her. She ran over with haste and the closer she got, the worse she felt.
Laying next to the wagon, was the worst sight she had ever seen. Her cousins, her brothers, laid with gunshots and it was all her fault.
The sounds of sobs entered her ears. They were soon replaced by a scream. Tears rolled down her face as she knelt beside Damon.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." She repeated over and over again. The guilt rising inside her the more the minute passed.
She had done this. She had been the reason why they went after her. She was the reason why they were dead now.
Too engulfed in her guilt, she didn't notice the group that had returned. Someone had wrapped their arms around her and began to pull her up. Her movements numb as she was taken from the scene.
"It's okay, Kayla. It's okay." The person repeated soothingly to her. It wasn't till they had reached the house, that she noticed it was her uncle.
She had been sent there four year prior when her mother had died of illness. Her father was too invested in work to pay her any attention and felt it would be better if she was in Mystic Falls. So this became her life. The Salvatore brothers had always included her and made her feel at home. Now they were gone and she was alone.
Left in her room for the night, she laid in bed and cried till she couldn't no more. She felt into a dreamless sleep, hoping that when she woke, none of this would've happen. But when she woke the next morning, the nightmare was far from over.
Once again, she had lost another person from her family. Her uncle was gone in a gruesome scene.
A week later, she received a letter from her father requesting her presence in New Orleans. To him, it was the up and coming new city and would be the foundation of her future. There she'd be introduced to society and one day find a suitor.
So, she packed everything up and moved, hoping to be able to move on with her life. But it was more easy being said then done.
Every day she saw their faces. Heard the gunshots. Felt her heart plummet to the pit of her stomach. How could she enjoy her life when her family lost theirs?
But she was a lady, she couldn't jeopardize her chances with a suitor. So she out on her best smile and buried the guilt inside her.
No one seemed to know the difference. No one seemed to care. Or at least that's what she thought.
Someone had been watching her. Watching her since the moment she had stepped foot in the town.
He saw the pain she tried to hide. Saw past the smile that never reached her eyes. And he would help her in anyway he could.
Despite all of his efforts to make her smile and laugh, none seemed to wipe that pain away. It shined in her eyes and the more he noticed it, the more it hurt him.
Finally, he knew the solution. He never wanted to use it but now he knew it would be the best option for her. With much research, Lincoln Tyler was able to help the girl with the broken smile.
He had been able to conjured a potion one that would put her to sleep. So that evening, she ate with him and drank the wine and fell into a deep sleep.
Taking her to her home, he had found a place to encase her inside of a tomb. A tomb that would never been found until the right time. Until one day, those who loved her dearly would shed tears in her remembrance and only then would she be awaken from her sleep. To live among them once again.
"May you one day be happy again, my lady." Lincoln spoke to her placing a kiss to her forehead and left her there. He could only hope that one day she'd wake and find what truly made her happy.
As the years went on, the thought of Kayla Salvatore became a distant memory.
When will Kayla be awaken? When will she be able to find her happiness?
