The clock on the wall of Davis Street Espresso ticked madly, and he tapped his fingers nervously on the counter, waiting for the tinkle of the bell above the door that most certainly meant he'd see her face again.
But the clock kept ticking, mocking him almost.
9:16
He checked his phone, which was supposed to be in the employees room and not in his pocket, but oh well. Sure enough, the calendar app said Sunday.
9:17
He walked over and checked the rack of newspapers positioned near the door to make sure it was full of today's paper, and they all had the comics section.
9:20
That's 5 solid minutes now. She'd never been this late.
Calum Hood shouldn't really care this much though, he doesn't even know the girl's name. All he knows is that every Sunday morning, she comes in at 9:15 sharp and takes today's paper from the rack at the door. She orders a large caramel iced coffee with extra ice, and sits in the same table for two at the window with the extra tall chairs. The table's always empty, like it's waiting for her and no one else dares to sit there.
And even though it's 9 in the morning, she always looks like a model. Well, to Calum she always does. But he couldn't ever tell her that, because he can't even get up the nerve to speak to her without the counter between them.
9:23
The bell tinkles wildly and in she walks, looking glorious to Calum but out of sorts to anyone else this morning. Her wild red curls are pulled back in a lazy effort of taming them, and shes dressed in a neon pink hoodie and a pair of black running leggings, accentuating her long legs. Her normally pale freckled cheeks are flushed pink from the chilly fall breeze outdoors.
She picks up a newspaper at the door and proceeds to the counter where Calum is collecting himself.
"Good morning," Calum says shyly.
"Good morning," she replies, her voice sweet but rushed. "Can I get a large caramel iced coffee with extra ice?"
"Yeah, of course." Calum calculates her total and heads into the back to make her drink, as Ashton is late to work again.
"Don't you have any help here?" the girl asks when Calum hands her the coffee. Their fingers brush momentarily, sending a jolt of electricity through Calum that he ignores with much difficulty.
"Oh, um yeah. He's just late like usual."
"Right. Well thanks.. Calum," she smiles and her bright green eyes crinkle at the corners. Calum's eyes open wide in surprise at hearing his name from her mouth. She laughs softly and points to his name tag on his work shirt. He laughs too, loving the sound of hers.
"Right, you're welcome.. um," he pauses, waiting for her to fill in as he doesn't know her name.
But she was already walking back to her seat for one at the table for two, Sunday newspaper and coffee in hand.
