sticking to the plan was very important to ji meizhen. her initial plan was to forget everything in her past after her parents died and live a normal life. but it all got wrecked when she met fan chengcheng again.

being someone's pretend girlfriend was a stupid idea she'll never pull herself into, or so she thought. money was the reason why meizhen agreed, a little desperate, and she wouldn't agree if it wasn't chengcheng.

their friendship slowly builded up again as they spent time together. meizhen thinks she thought and treated him more as a friend in their relationship, a best friend she'll never replace in her heart. now, a new chapter opens in their relationship as partners.

meizhen and chengcheng graduated afterwards. it was one of her goals in life, and it's even better because she got to spend it with the people she loves.

"meimei! i'm so proud of you! i feel like your mom." chengcheng's mom cried while she hugged meizhen tightly.

"she is your daughter-in-law, mom." chengcheng winked and meizhen elbowed him on his side.

"chengcheng, meizhen, have you thought about my offer? it's a great opportunity."

they couple looked at his father who had a serious face. a week ago mr. fan offered chengcheng and meizhen a scholarship to a prestigious university in california. rich families in china often send their child into a university abroad for better education before passing the heir. they treat meizhen as their child too.

"i'm giving you an option to decline. both of you can have a position in the company immediately without it." he smiled to them.

"i want to go, but how about you?" meizhen looked into his eyes when she asked him.

"i'm going if you want to. without you, i won't. let's go together." chengcheng put his arm around meizhen and brought her closer to him.

after a month, they flew to california and settled in at a unit owned by chengcheng's family. it was meizhen's first time abroad and she was really nervous. the foreign country's culture also shocked her, but with chengcheng by her side, she feels at ease.

one night, a year after, chengcheng took her to a special dinner on the rooftop of a building. the beautiful night sky was clearly seen. lights from the city, hanging lights, and scented candles were the only light source. food was cooked directly on the other corner away from the table and a waiter was standing near the table.

"surprise! it's our anniversary." chengcheng held her hand and lead her to the table, pulling the chair for her as the gentleman he is.

"it's been one year since i became your girlfriend? it feels like longer." meizhen was impressed and fascinated of the beautiful view and his efforts.

"it's important in relationships. actually, i counted our anniversary at my sister's wedding, that night." chengcheng smiled at her then called the waiter to serve the first meal.

they ate peacefully, chengcheng making a few jokes here and there, until meizhen opened up a serious matter in the middle of eating the main course.

"chengcheng, i want you to stop paying for the bills of my apartment in china. i can pay it for myself now and i don't want to depend on you forever."

"can't you just live somewhere else?" chengcheng furrowed his eyebrows and reached for the glass of wine.

"i'll buy a new unit once i started working. the money from our pretend game isn't enough for a whole year rent."

"transfer to one of my units, whichever you like, or just live with me." he smirked behind the glass. meizhen kicked his foot under the table and almost choked him on his wine.

"are you kidding me? we're not married yet and we don't even sleep in the same room here."

meizhen rolled her eyes and drank on her wine. when she opened her eyes, he wasn't on his seat anymore but instead, he was kneeling in front of her. she almost choked too. is he....?

"stop joking. oh my gosh." a hand covered her shocked and blushing face.

"then, ji meizhen, will you marry me?" chengcheng took out a box from his blazer. it showed a french pavé diamond ring in 14k rose gold.

"you planned this, right?"

"yes, and i'm serious." he innocently blinked up to her, with no smile to show that he's serious.

meizhen took her hands off her face and heaved a big sigh. she looked straight into his eyes. his cute hopeful puppy eyes made her crack up a bit.

"wait, let me ask, when will we get married?"

"as soon as after we graduate and come back to china."

"hmmm. why would you propose now? or you're just using engagement as an excuse to sleep next to me." meizhen squinted at him playfully.

"why would we prolong it if we'll eventually get married to each other? and you're asking too many questions! my knees hurt already." he whined.

"yes! i do!" meizhen chuckled.

chengcheng hurriedly took the ring in his hand and put it on her ring finger. he stood up, handed the pair of the ring to her and ordered her to do the same to his. his hand reached for her arm to pull her up to a hug. they smiled in the arms of each other, and stayed in that position a few minutes.

when they got back in their seats, a sweet dessert was served to match the lovely mood. meizhen almost got mad at him again because his hand didn't wanted to let go of hers.

"i almost forgot to ask. why did you marry me?"

"you're really testing me, eh? i love you. you're the only girl i would want to be my girlfriend and marry. and you, why did you say yes?" he challenged her in the same tone as her question.

"i only see myself staying forever with one person, and that's you. i love you too." meizhen looked down shyly, pretending to be busy eating the sweet cake.

"does this mean i can sleep next to you later? wait- i'm joking! don't throw away the ring!" their laughters and warm smiles filled the rest of their lovely night.

this is the last chapter :')
