After school I over heard a conversation in one of the near by class rooms. Well an argument really, and like any normal person, I slid closer to the door to listen in.
"You said you broke up with her!" shouted a voice like Sophie's. But Sophie never shouts...
"I said I would break up with her. There's a difference!" shouted a voice I knew all to well, Jon.
"Well then why didn't you?!"
"I don't want to hurt her." he almost whispered and I had to strain my ears to hear him. Ok then, cheat on me with my best friend. That won't hurt at all! I thought and burst into the room to share my thought.
"Flo! It's not want you think!" exclaimed Jon after I told him how he definetly wouldn't hurt me by cheating on me.
"It kind of is." muttered Sophie. I turned on her.
"You're my best friend!" I yelled "How could you do this!"
"I thought he'd broken up with you!" she defended herself. I turned back to Jon, fighting tears.
"I need you Jon, you know I do right now. You're my ancor, without you, I'll float away!"
"Look, I know this is a bad time for you, but I've been thinking about it a long time. It's just not working for me." he admitted.
"And did you know this Monday night?" I asked, tears flowing freely now. I was going to lose my Mum and now Jon too. "The night I needed you, the night I found out about Mum?"
"Yes." he said quietly.
"Wait, Flo, what's wrong with your Mum?" asked Sophie.
"She has cancer." I choked out. I had wanted to tell her anyway.
"No." She breathed. "Flo, I'm so sorry. I'm gonna go." she turned to leave, "Oh and Jon, we're over." she said and left the room.
"Same here." I said and wiped at my tears as I followed suit.
I ran all the way home since I'd missed the bus and it wasn't too far. 30 mins later and I burst through the front door, tears streaming down my face.
"Flo?" called my Mum. I didn't answer just sobbed and shut myself in my room by pulling my dresser in front of the door. I then flung myself on my bed and cried into my pillow.
"Sweetie what is it?" I heard but ignored. I knew I was being rude, especially because I knew she wanted to help but couldn't, but I just wanted to be alone.
About an hour later, when my dad was home, I heard the door being pushed slowly open. I kept my now dry eyes on the ceiling.
My dad maneuvered his way around my dresser and pushed it totally out the way. He then left again. When he returned he had Mum with him and he helped her sit next to me on the bed.
"Honey, how can I help you?" she said.
"I know I'm going to lose you and I've lost him too." realising the situation she turned to my dad and mouthed, 'BOYFRIEND PROBLEMS' before saying,
"Which stupid guy gave up on you this time?"
"Jon." I said and started to cry again at his name. This was not helping.
"Shhhh, there, there." soothed my mother as she pulled me gently in to the circle of her arms.
"I'll miss you Mum." I whispered.
"I"ll always be there for you." she said softly as she strocked my hair.
