Chapter 4
I was starting to think that my parents thought something was up with me because of the way I had been isolating myself, and not because I didn't like socializing or I'd rather be napping in my bedroom. They kept asking me if I was okay or if I had anything new going on in my life.
Not only that, but I was now being forced to spend time with my family in the way I hated the most.
Watching a movie.
Don't get me wrong, I loved watching movies but with my family? It was pure torture. Ryder would always point out the flaws in the movie, Alan would complain that there wasn't enough action, Orchid would whine about the movie being too long, and Tulip would be mad that there wasn't enough romance.
I didn't get why my parents thought it would be a good idea to watch a movie together.
Especially when some of us weren't paying attention. Well, just me and Orchid. We were on our phones instead, with me looking at memes and Orchid doing whatever an orchid does.
"Awe, come on!" Orchid suddenly said, still looking at her phone. "Are you serious?!"
"Orchid, really?" Mom asked. "We're supposed to be watching a movie together. If you are going to be on your phone, you can at least refrain from reacting to whatever is on your phone out loud."
"It's not my fault I came across a post that upset me," Orchid said. "Jerome's gay."
I looked up from my phone and over at Orchid. How did she know that?
"What? Really?" Alan asked.
"Yeah, he posted it online," Orchid said.
"Why does it upset you?" I asked, feeling afraid it was because she didn't agree with it.
"Because he's hot and I'll never have a chance with him," Orchid said. "This sucks."
I had to see what post Orchid was talking about and when I found it, I smiled slightly. If there was one thing I really liked about Jerome, it was his sense of humour. And he definitely used it in this post.
He posted a picture of him with a rainbow flag and along it was a caption saying, I'm happy to announce that I am not a hetero lol. Unfortunately for those of you who are also attacted to guys, you're going to have more competition now that I'm out and about because let's face it, I'm perfect.
He was so full of himself at times and honestly, that just made him more attractive.
Unfortunately, I was also feeling jealous because he was technically saying he could get any guy, and I just wanted him to have me.
At least I still had his hoodie that he let me borrow me. That he was never getting back.
I was even wearing it right now. I couldn't help it. It was very comfortable, and it reminded me of him. Obviously. Since it was his.
Was being the keyword. I now owned it.
I was hoping the topic of Jerome being gay would just drop and everyone would move on like it was normal. I did want to see if they accepted it or not so I would know in the future for me, but I also didn't want my family talking about him otherwise I would blush.
But of course, my family continued talking about it even though my parents were so keen on watching the movie.
"Are you sure that he is?" Alan asked Orchid. "Because he doesn't seem like it."
Ouch. That offended me.
I hated when people thought gay people had to act a certain way. Literally the only thing that made people gay was being attracted to someone of the same sex. Nothing else. They didn't have to be super feminine. They didn't have to dress a certain way.
I really wanted to say something about it, but I didn't want to get into a debate and I would rather stay quiet. However, someone else ended up speaking up.
It was Ryder.
"You do know that gay people don't all have to act the same way, right?" he said. "The only reason why someone is gay is because they like someone of the same sex, you imbecile."
"Okay, sorry," Alan said. "I was just saying that Jerome of all people doesn't seem like it."
"Alan, he doesn't have to act a certain way," Dad said. "Like Ryder said, not all gay people act the same. Stop being close-minded."
"You're so mean to your children," Alan muttered.
"Then don't be close-minded," Dad said.
"So... You're okay with it?" I asked slowly. "W-with Jerome being gay, I mean?"
"Yeah, of course," Dad said. "Him being gay doesn't change anything about that. We love having him around, and it's really nice to see you close to someone that isn't a family member. It's not like we're going to tell you not to be friends with him over something he can't control."
That gave me a bit of hope for me but... I don't know. I still didn't feel close to ready to come out.
I just hoped I would get the same reaction from my family when I came out.
If I came out...
"Wait, Nolan, did you know?" Orchid asked.
"Uh, yes?" I said. "He's my best friend. Why wouldn't I?" Even though I found out last week.
"And you didn't tell me?" Orchid asked. "Now I can't ogle him anymore. Thanks a lot, Nolan."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "Uh, it's not my place to tell. And I didn't even know you liked him." Did I feel bad for liking Jerome as well? Especially since I had a chance with Jerome and Orchid didn't?
Not really, no.
"What are you all talking about?" Tulip asked. "And does it have to do with ships?"
"Possibly," Orchid said. "Jerome is gay, meaning he likes boys."
"And will get a boyfriend one day?" Tulip asked.
"Exactly," Orchid said.
"Interesting..." Tulip said. "Very interesting..."
"What does that mean?" Orchid asked.
"You'll see," Tulp said. "You'll see very soon."
