Chapter 6
I was kind of looking forward for the day but at the same time, I wasn't. It was Take Your Kid To Work Day for my grade at the school, meaning I get to stay home from school.
Unfortunately, I just had to go with Dad to work. I mean, I would love to work with animals for the day but at the same time, I just wanted to sleep in. I tried convincing Dad to let me go with Mom to work but apparently, being a stay at home Mom didn't count for Take Your Kid To Work Day.
Rude. Stay at home parents took a lot of effort too.
To make things worse, it wasn't just me going. Alan and Orchid were coming too and even though they liked animals, they hated working so they were probably only going to be complaining the whole time.
Which made me feel very grumpy.
At least me being grumpy about waking up early faded as soon as we got to the vet clinic. There were so many cute animals here, especially dogs. "I think I'm in heaven," I said, going to one of the cages a puppy was in. "She's so cute."
"How do you know it's a she?" Alan asked.
"Because unlike you, I'm smart and know how to use my brain," I said before pointing to a small whiteboard beside the cage. "It says right here. Molly. Female."
Alan just sneered at me before Dad said, "Okay, a few rules while we're here. One, don't take any animals out of their cages until I tell you to. Two, don't touch any animals unless I tell you to. Three, stay out of the surgery area. It doesn't matter if I have to go in there. You three have to stay out of it."
"Then what's the point of taking us to work if we can't see you work?" Orchid asked.
"You can," Dad said. "Just not in the surgery area because you and Alan would probably distract me, and Nolan would accidentally trip and knock over something."
I didn't even bother objecting because I would probably even end up doing that outside of the surgery area anyway. At least three times.
"So in other news, it's all because of Nolan?" Alan asked.
"Don't make me change my mind and only allow Nolan in the room," Dad said.
"No thanks," I said. "Surgery means cutting animals open and I would rather not throw up due to my weak stomach."
"So... It's still Nolan's fault," Alan said.
"Dad, can I take Molly out of the cage and let her bite and scratch Alan?" I asked.
Dad sighed. "Why did I think it would be a good idea to bring all three of you here?"
I shrugged. "I could have stayed home with Mom, but you wouldn't let me."
"Yeah, whatever, I'm just going to give you all something to do and please, follow everything I say," Dad said. "Don't take any shortcuts or do something else just because you think it's easier."
"Which is a shortcut," I said. "Which you already told us not to do."
"Okay, just for that comment, Alan and Orchid are going to take Molly for a walk and you're going to help me out here," Dad said.
I immediately scowled as I walked away from the cage. I already bonded with Molly but now, I couldn't even take her for a walk.
Apparently, my smart-aleck comment wasn't the only reason Dad wanted Orchid and Alan to be the one to take Molly on a walk because shortly after they left, Dad said, "You know, I actually want to talk to you about something."
