Hal/Evil Hal

I am passing in front of this Tom Mason when he starts to talk. Tom says, “You know as soon as you get near that Humbvie Weaver’s gonna take you out. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had Tector lining you up in his sights right now. You’re going to die for nothing.” I say to Tom Mason, “Colonel Weaver isn’t going to kill his best friends’ son,” Tom says, “No. Dan Weaver wouldn’t do that but he’s not calling the shots down there. Marina Peralta is. And if you’re betting that she won’t give the order or that Tector would miss, you're going to lose,” Tom continues, “Look there is one way I can see us getting out of this. You have Karen release Anne and Lexi and bring them safely back to Charleston. And we can talk about the Volm plan.” I say, “Or you give me the Volm plan and I’ll give you Anne and your daughter.”

“So if you don’t care about your own life, consider who else might get hurt if you don’t give me the information I need. I kick this Tom Mason’s injured leg and he yells out. “Now I could have killed Weaver. I believe you know that. Next time it might be Ben. Or maybe Matt. Why don’t you think about that.” This Tom Mason says, “I should have seen this coming. I should have noticed what was going on with you.” I’m not paying any attention to this Tom Mason. “I’d love to say it was because I was too busy with my job,” Tom continues, “But we both know it started way before that. Before the invasion even. I missed a lot of dinners. I missed a lot of lacrosse games.” I can feel something happening inside. This Tom Mason says, “But your mom was always there.” I look over at Tom Mason. “You know what she thought you were going to be? A fighter pilot.” I look away from Tom Mason and say, “All really.” Tom Mason says, ‘Personally really I didn’t see it.” I look away from the window to this Tom Mason, “And why not.” Tom Mason says, “Well the thing about being a pilot is… one lapse in concentration, one wrong judgment and you’re dead. I didn’t think you had that kind of focus. But after fighting next to you for the last two years, side by side, watching you lead men and women into battle, I realized as always your mom was right. And I really wish she’d lived to see the man you’ve become.” My hand starts to shake. Tom Mason says, “She really loved you Hal.” I start to raise the gun. Tom Mason says, “Come on Hal.” Tom Mason starts getting up off of the ground, “Give it to me.” I yell and point the gun at Tom Mason, “Shut up, And sit down!” Hal is breaking, “Or I’m going to shoot.” Tom Mason says confidently, “I don’t think that you will.”
