HERE YOU GO.
But he doesn't give up the chase, and he's slippery like a fish in the water.
"Help!" I giggle playfully and call to Liah, struggling to swim faster. I hate laughing when I'm swimming, it makes me drown. "No!" I scream with laughter as Ryan grabs my ankles and drags me backwards into his arms. But I'm strong enough to grab his wrists and whirl him across the lake with my new vamistrix strength.
"Whoa!" He chuckles after being thrown twenty feet away. I push off the lake bank and swim to attack Ryan. I jump onto his back, being tossed around like he's a bucking bronco. He bucks me off and I fall backwards into the deep blue water. I crawl onto the bank to rest, or I'll surely die from laughing too hard. I drag myself up onto the sand and let the heat melt the water droplets running down my skin. I wtatch as Liah and Matt have a splashing war. But where's Ryan...? Crap, he's waiting for an attack.
Ryan bursts out of the water in front of me, spraying it all across me. He shakes his wet hair and jumps onto the bank and plops down next to me. Phew, no attack.
"Hey, you too OCD about the lake to swim more?"
"Haha, no. Just trying to get some sun."
"Oh, so your one of those tanning girls, are you?" He raises an eyebrow.
"What? No!" I cry defensively. Tanning girls were the most boring of them all. They talk about hair and clothes and getting tans and going to starbucks and shopping. Thats not me.
"Then why do you need sun, huh? You look fine to me."
"It's no about getting browner skin, idiot. It feels nice." I laugh at him.
"Your still mostly human. I hate the sun. It stretches my skin."
"It does not." I contradict. His skin never looked stretched. It was so perfect.
"Your jwust jwealous your wittle human skin will nwever fweel thwat way...And yes, the sun makes it feel like my skin is stretching. It's handleable, but annoying." He babies me.
"Your handleable, but annoying." I tease him, laying back against the sand. He shoves me gentely and dives back into the lake.
"Hey, what do you say we go up to the house for some birthday stuff?" Liah calls to me. I nod in response and throw my clothes back on.
Back at the house I realize Avalin had decorated the kitchen while I was asleep. On the table sits a big, vanilla cake with blue candles. And I'll be the only one eating it.
"HAPPY SEVENTEENTH BIRTHDAY!" Matt, Liah, and Ryan all shout at once, followed by whistling.
"Thank you, guys." I smile. Ryan grabs some matches from a drawer and lights the million candles stuck inside my cake. Everyone pulls out a seat and watches me. "One, two, three, four: Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Evalin, happy birthday to you!" They all sing cheerfully.
"And a grumpy old lady on channel eighty, and scooby doo on channel two!" Matt adds in kindergarden verses. We laugh.
"Make a wish, Eva." Ryan looks up at me with a gentle smile. I bend over the candles, thinking of a wish. What do I really want? What do I wish would happen? I think of something perfect. I close my eyes, blowing against the flickering flames. I wish that Ryan and I will be together forever.
"Yay!" Everyone howls excitedly for me.
"What did you wish for?" Ryan asks.
"Well, it won't come true if I tell you, will it?" I grin widely. I cut myself a giant slice of the cake, and the vampires watch as I gobble it down. It makes me feel a little out of place, but I don't let it get to me.
