| Nicole’s POV |
I just stared at the text, my fingers lingering over the keyboard as I thought of how I could reply to it or if I wanted to reply to it at all. The shock—of receiving a text form him—was what caused me to just stare at my phone. Knowing Michael and I are in the same homeroom, I look up and see him entering the class with his phone in his hands. As I look at him, he stares back at me with a look I couldn’t decipher before he sits down in his usual seat. In the heat of the moment [of confusion and shock] I type away a reply:
To: Michael
How did you get my number?
When I sent the message, Michael looks at his phone and looks back to me again; shaking his head slightly before going back to his device—probably typing a reply up. I didn’t bother to keep my eyes set on him and just kept my sight on my phone and saw the little ‘typing’ bubble coming from Michael.
Waiting—to see what he was writing—literally had me at the edge of my seat and I had to remind myself that Calum was beside me [and a bunch of other friends] and I didn’t want to make them suspicious and tell them who I was texting because I knew that people like ‘us’ aren’t very fond of people like Michael:
From: Michael
You never changed your number and I just so happened to still have your number
To: Michael
Why didn’t you delete it?
There was a long pause and I looked to Michael to see what was delaying his response. All I could see is him taking a deep breath in and out as he looks up to the ceiling—as if thinking of a reasonable excuse on why he still has my number. Some more time passed before he finally answered:
From: Michael
I just never found myself to have the guts to delete it. That and I was never bothered to and I’m kind of glad I didn’t because now I can easily tell you to not hurt my best friend
To: Michael
Why do you hate me so much?
From: Michael
I don’t hate you Nicole. I could never hate you.
To: Michael
Let me rephrase myself….why don’t you hate me?
From: Michael
Are you seriously asking me that?
To: Michael
Just answer the fucking question
From: Michael
Fine… I don’t hate you because I actually don’t know why I don’t. Like I said, I could never hate you
