The last few days had been tense. I stayed in my room for most of the days. I explained to Russel that I was emotionally exhausted and that I needed time to myself. He understood and answered everyone on my whereabouts. Other than the girl talks with Noodle, I had plenty of alone time to gather my thoughts.
There was a reason for my isolation though. My birthday was coming up; tomorrow to be precise.
It was usually a time I preferred to spend alone. A time that was always overshadowed by much more important things. I've growned accustomed to aging under the radar.Seeing as it was a clear afternoon, I decided to go for a stroll, grabbing my jacket and a lighter. I didn't smoke, but I'd entertain myself endlessly by just flicking it on and off. They seemed to be lying everywhere in Kong.
I walk aimlessly, letting the sidewalk lead me with its twists and and turns, crossing streets, looking through store windows. I walk past the old coffee shop I used to spend my high school days at, looking up at the old worn out sign. This place had character. A welcoming homey vibe that had a bistro kind of interior. "Luxury for the average" as the people around the area would say.
I walk through the door, the clock acknowledging my entrance as I make my way to the counter. It was never full. Only a hand full of people sat scattered around the shop, most of them on cellphones or laptops. I would silently scold them for never taking the time to take in the vibrant colours of the walls or the smell of fresh coffee brewing. The wooden tables, fresh pastries and most of all, the beautiful view of people walking past the windows. I used to sit and stare out to the people walking by, figuring out their personalities and where they would be going. It made me a very observant person. I once saw a woman walk past pushing a stroller, no ring on her left ring finger. She always wore these dull looking clothes, but when she took the time to interact with her baby, her face would light up like child once again believing the world is perfect.
"Y/n?"
The girl behind the counter was smiling at me.
"Hi Chelsea." I say, smiling back widely.
"I haven't seen you in ages! Where have you been?"
I awkwardly rub the back of my neck. "Oh, well... you know, just been busy with this and that."
"How's Josh?"
I was scratching around for an excuse, but nothing came to mind. "We kinda split up. It was for the best."
"That's such a shame! But let's put a smile on your face. A free coffee, perhaps?"
I chuckled, realising how much I missed our small chats. "Actually... have you got any peppermint tea?"
"Peppermint tea? Didn't take you for a tea lover! Not many people order that, other than the odd guy that comes in sometimes."
Something told me to make sure of my suspicions. "Odd guy? He doesn't happen to have blue hair by any chance, does he?"
"Yeah! And these weird black eyes, must be contact lenses or something... you know him?"
"We kinda share an apartment. Him, I and 3 other people."
"Oh, that's so funny, because he's sitting right there!" She said, motioning her head in the direction of the corner of the store. There sat Blue Boy, staring out the window, a cup of tea in hand.
"Hey, Y/n, if you wanna sit by him, I'll bring you your tea." Chelsea said, smiling friendly.
"Thanks Chels, it's nice to see a familiar face again."I walk in Blue Boy's direction, silently sliding myself in the chair next to him, bumping him hard enough to snap him out of his state.
"You know staring at a window won't make it less see-through, right?"
He jumped slightly, looking at me a bit surprised.
"What?" I said, half laughing to myself.
"Yew left yewr room." He said, a smile creeping over his face.
I turned to the window, watching a car drive past. "Yeah, well, I got a bit bored of just laying in bed. So I decided to go on an adventure." I said, lazily flailing my arms in the air.
"An adventure?"
Before I could answer, an employee placed the tea and a slice of chocolate cake in front of me, placing a piece of folded up paper under the foam cup.
"Yell if you need anything else." He said, placing a hand on my shoulder and walking back to the kitchen."I didn't order chocolate cake..." I mumble to myself, unfolding the paper and reading the quickly written words:
"Give me a call sometime if you want something more sweeter than the cake. It's on me xoxo."
"Wot does it say?" Blue Boy asked, curiously looking over my shoulder. I scrunch up the paper, tossing it to the side.
"It says you should share this with me. I can't eat the whole slice."
"It really said fha..."
I interrupt him by shoving a spoon full of cake in his mouth. "Don't talk with your mouth full dear, it's very rude."
He snorted, and took the spoon out his mouth. "Fhis is really gud." He said, taking another bite.
"I guess this is like an early birthday present from the universe." I say, taking a sip from my tea.
"Yewr birfhday is near?" He asked, his attention peaked.
I mentally slap myself for blurting that out so carelessly. "Yeah, but I'm not big on parties and celebrations."
"Well when's yewr birfhday?"
I grabbed the spoon out of his hand, sampling the cake in front of me. It was surprisingly really good. Tasted even better than it looked, if that was even possible.
"Tomorrow." I mumbled.
"Luk' who's talking wiff a full moufh now." He teased. I waved my spoon at him in mock threatening, "Oi, you know what they say about hungry women and spoons, right?"
"Wot?"
"That people wish they had a knife to get the job done quicker. And I'm not just talking about eating cake."
He laughed, putting his arms up jokingly. "Excuse me madam, I jos' came 'ere for tea."
"Yeah, that's what they all say." I giggled, shoving the spoon back in his mouth.
