Special Treatment

Walking into school the next week was pretty hard. I walked in alone. Went to my locker alone. Walked to class alone. I had no best friend to tell about my weekend. I couldn't complain to her about my hot water going off, so I had to take a shower in ice cold water. Phoebe wasn't there.

"Hey Megan. You doing okay?" This kid I never talked to patted me on the shoulder. I nodded, said "Thanks." and walked away.

That was the reaction I got from everybody all day. Even the teachers gave me special treatment. Here's an example:

I walked into my class more then just a few minutes late. After the door closed I felt every pair of eyes land on me. Whispers started to fill the air and I walked to my desk. "Megan?" My teacher called.

"Yes?"

"This is the third time you were late to class. Can you stay after class to talk to me?"

I nod and go back to staring into space for the rest of the class. When the bell ring I got up and went up to the big desk at the front of the room. "You wanted to talk to me?" I ask.

"Ahh yes." Ms. Rogers pushes her glasses back onto the bridge of her nose. "You do know that this is the third time you've been late to class, right?"

I nod. "Yes. And I'm free for detention today after school."

Honestly, I was being completely serious. I wasn't going to just let the fact that I lost my best friend as an excuse to be late, or anything else for that matter.

Ms. Rogers nods and says, "Actually Megan, I'm not going to give you a detention. Just make sure you aren't late again. Okay?"

"Um, yes, okay. But may I ask why I'm not getting a detention?"

She looks down at her desk nervously and replies, "Well, you know, with everything that's going on right now, I understand you're a bit distracted. No reason to punish you for that."

"Ma'am, I'm not trying to be rude, but please. Can you just give me that detention? I don't want people to think I'm getting special treatment. I know you understand but I don't think the rest of the teenage population in this school will be very happy about this."

Ms. Rogers brushes her gray streaked hair out of her eyes and thinks for a second. "Well okay. I expect for you to be at detention after school today. No exceptions."

You probably think by now that I have some serious issues right now, but I smiled. "Thank you." I say and walk out of class.

The rest of the day pretty much went like that. I had to practically beg every single one of my teachers not to give me special treatment. I want them to treat me just like they do everyone else.

No exceptions.
