Story 4: My Big Brother

My big brother, Daniel, is always hiding. I don't know why, he just does it. My mommy and daddy look at me and him with a look of confusion on their faces, as if to say, ''Why are playing together?''

Being only young, I loved my brother, but I hated him too. He'd always whisper things in my ear. Bad things.

''You'll always be alone.''

''You won't make any friends with that face.''

''I pity you.''

Things like that, but only on the rare occasion. Daniel and I love playing hide and seek, and as I said Daniel is already good at hiding, so I'd always lose.  But sometimes, whenever Daniel was around, animals like squirrels and rats would wind up dead on our lawn. I'd always cry when I'd see one.

But I remember Daniel wasn't always like this. He used to kind and caring for me. He was nice to everyone around him. Except whenever I'd see him coming home from school, I'd look out the window to see him being bullied by the four mean boys up the street. They'd burn their cigarette buds into his face, knock him to the ground and beat him senseless. He'd always come in crying after.

But I remember the day Daniel's behaviour turned into the one I explained above. He was twelve and I was six. I was playing with my Barbie dolls on the front lawn in my blue and white dress. I looked over to the front door when I heard it open. Daniel came walking out.

''Hey Danny! Do you want to play Barbie dolls with me?'' I asked him.

He said nothing.

He walked by me but looked back and smiled at me briefly. My smile turned into a frown. What was he doing?

Daniel kept walking towards the road. I could hear a truck in the distance...

It got closer and closer, and when it was close enough, Daniel walked out in front of it.

I screamed and began crying. My Mommy and Daddy ran out to see what was going on and in a state of shock of what happened they called an ambulance.

But the next day, I was sitting in my room, drawing pictures and humming to myself when someone knocked on my door.

''Come in.'' I said.

In walked Daniel.

''Danny!'' I squeeled.

I got up to run and give him a hug. He was cold and pale and wearing the same clothes from yesterday.

''Get off me.'' He said, pushing me off him.

''Things are gonna change around here.'' He snarled. ''You won't be alone, anymore, I'm gonna be here all the way into your adulthood.''

Now whenever Mommy and Daddy see me playing with him or I say ''Mommy, Daniel is being mean to me.'' or ''Daddy, tell Daniel to stop killing the squirrels.'' They would both hang their heads and cry.

Now Daniel is causing real problems. The four boys up the street have been found lying in their beds... dead.
