"So he just-" Patilda asked.
"Yep," Diana finished.
"And you obviously said-" Patilda asked
"Of course yes," Diana said.
"Oh. My. Gosh. Diana!" Patilda screamed. "You're living the dream right now!"
"I know!" Diana squealed. "Even though we are technically scrubbing the floor right now."
Formal was in a little over twenty-four hours and Diana's chores were no near close to being done. Ivy kept adding more and more to her list.
"Okay, you have a fair point. But still, how often does it happen that your crush asks you to a dance? That seems like it's straight out of a fairytale," Patilda said.
"Well," Diana started as she sat up to dunk her sponge in the soapy bucket water, "Matt isn't a prince so this can't be a fairytale. But you're right. It seems too good to be true. Like it was too easy, if that makes sense." Diana gasped. "Do you think he asked me out as a joke?"
"Oh no way," Patilda argued. "Matt is a genuinely nice guy. He would never do something like that. The guy is too down to earth."
"But what if it was some sort of dare?" Diana asked. "I mean he did catch on that I like him after I drew him in my notebook. He probably told all of his football friends, too. They probably told him to do this so they can all make fun of me and-"
"Woah, Diana. You're jumping to conclusions here," Patilda said calming her down. "Matt actually asked you out because he likes you as a human being. There's no twist or prank to this. Do you really think he would do something to hurt someone? Honestly?"
Diana took a deep breath. "No, you're right. I was spiraling down a bad train of thought. Thanks for keeping me on the right track."
Patilda smiled. "That's what best friends are for." They both went back to scrubbing the floor when Patilda snorted. "You really drew him in your math notebook."
"I didn't mean too!" Diana defended herself. "I did it subconsciously. I was bored and went off to my dream land, which happens to be where Matt and I are married."
"Diana, you're too cute," Patilda mocked.
"Whatever," Diana laughed while rolling her eyes.
She pulled out a list from her back pocket and ran her finger down it until she found "Scrub the Floor." She crossed it off with her red pen.
"Is it cleaned enough?" Patilda asked.
"I think so. Next is to clean the oven and do the dishes. Which one do you want?"
"I'll take the oven so you can watch out for your sisters."
Ivy decided that the best way to reward Grace and Violet's after receiving detention was to take them dress shopping for the afternoon. Diana had snuck Patilda in so she wouldn't be alone while doing the extra chores, and not to mention having the extra help.
"Good idea," Diana said rubbing her head. "Man, I wish every time I got in trouble Ivy took me on a shopping date. Can you imagine? I'd be the best dressed girl at school."
"I know. It's obvious who are the favorites in this household."
"Oh, it's been obvious since I'd first moved in."
Patilda grabbed a sponge and scrubbed the the crust off the metal bars in the oven. It wasn't coming off easily. It was layers on top of layers of crust.
