february fourteenth

it's valentine's day, and michael has a suspicion something will happen at their locker today. conversation hearts are meant for valentine's day, after all. 

because of this, they decide to go to school early and stake out their locker to see who's been placing the candy, and what they'll do today.

they're out the door way earlier than normal, but they still don't get to see their mom. it's another sticky note when they got downstairs, and with a sigh they'd taken the money and went on their way.

when michael gets to school, the halls are eerily empty because of how early it is. they go to their locker, not surprised to find it bare of any candy, and change into uniform shoes and get the books they'll need for their morning classes.

then, they close their locker back up and sit discreetly nearby, pulling out some notes to study. they hope their conversation heart leaver would be back today, but they do have studying to do so if the person is a no-show it's not like michael wasted their morning.

not even fifteen minutes after michael has settled down and began to study, they look up at the sound of footsteps. they're not surprised to see calum hood, one of the most perfect and popular guys in school, heading to his locker with earbuds in his ears and a gym bag. it's clear he's there to workout before class, and michael goes back to studying. michael had chosen a good spot to sit, because calum walks right by them on the way to the weight room without noticing them.

a little less than forty-five minutes later, michael sees that it was around the time they'd normally be rolling out of bed. they sigh, hoping this stakeout gives some sort of answer. they glance around the hallway again, and see calum leaving the boys' locker room. he goes to his locker and pulls out a ziploc bag full of conversation hearts, and michael's eyes widen in disbelief. calum can't be the one leaving the little candies on their locker door, can he?

michael watches from their hiding spot as calum looks around the halls before sticking the bag of candy on michael's locker. he turns to leave, but michael's body moves before their brain can process what's happening. they stand and step out from their hiding spot, and calum freezes.

michael locks eyes with calum, and the tan boy opens his mouth. he's at a loss for words though, so michael ends up speaking first.

"was this some kind of joke? did you hide something mean in the big bag of candy?" they ask, suspicious as soon as they've gotten over the shock.

"i- no," calum replies, looking at the floor. he didn't realize his actions could be perceived as malicious, even though he was friends with luke hemmings- one of michael's main bullies.

"then what's going on?" michael asks, confused with the entire situation. they'd thought maybe someone in the school had a crush on them, but then they found out it was calum- he couldn't have a crush on michael, could he?

"i left a note in the bag of candy. maybe check it out?" calum asks hesitantly, moving to leave.

"i will, hood, but it better not be something mean in the end," michael says, moving to grab the bag off his locker.

"i'll see you around, mikey," calum says, taking off towards the back of the school.
