Lila's POV

----------------

It's been four days since the plague hit. I was sitting on my bed when Hunter came into my room.

"I think it's okay to go out now," he said, grinning. I jumped up, grabbed my sword and ran out of my room. I passed Mom, who was standing in the kitchen. She was coughing.

"Are you okay?" I asked worriedly.

"Yes, yes. Just a little frog in my throat," she said, smiling weakly. I wasn't entirely convinced, but I put it to the back of my mind and ran outside.

I climbed trees in the apple orchard beside our house and chased chickens around, which was always funny.

When I was tired, I decided to go home. When I walked inside, Rue came up to me with tears in her eyes.

"It's Mom," she said, tears rolling down her cheeks. I ran to her room and saw her lying in bed, her face pale and her eyes distant.

Hunter and Levi were already beside the bed.

"Mom, what's happening?" I asked, my voice cracking.

"The plague... it has come," Mom said.

"What's going to happen?" I asked.

"I'll explain," Rue said. She took me outside Mom's room and put her hand on my shoulder.

"Mom... isn't going to be around for very much longer," she said, swallowing hard.

"I'm 12 years old, you don't have to talk to me like I'm six," I said, sad and angry.

"Lila, please. This isn't easy for any of us. Just, let's go in and say goodbye," Rue said, tears now coming down her face in waterfalls.

We walked back in and sat around Mom's bed.

"Kids, no matter what happens, you have to stay strong. I love you," Mom said.

"We love you too," Hunter said.

She closed her eyes and her breathing stopped. Then I started to wail.

"Why!?" I said through my tears.

We were all crying as we sat there. Nobody knew what to do now.

"Let's bury her," Hunter said. He draped the blanket over her head and we carried her to the oak tree where our dad was buried.

We buried her and Rue and I planted roses on her grave.

"They're together with Notch now," Hunter said, tears trickling down his face.

We all nodded in agreement and walked back to the house. I walked to my room and cried.

It had finally sunk into my heart that we were orphans.

We were all alone in this big, cruel world.

A/N: Biggest feels chapter I've ever written. I'm sorry if I made you cry. Also, pretty short because I'm going to update another chapter today.
