You're the smoke to my high...

----

Marshall Lee awoke in a dark room, his head throbbing from the utterly stupid action he'd taken in an attempt to remove all feeling from his heart, and all thoughts of the Prince Gumball from his mind.

He worked to sit up, but was met with a shooting pain that seemed to ricochet throughout his skull. He'd never exposed himself to so much sunlight...

It had been an accident really. Even on impulse, Marshall Lee knew he was not that stupid. He knew he simply wanted his thousand year old heart to cease it's pounding at that moment, but he'd never do it that way, no; it wouldn't work that way.

It wasn't that he'd wanted to necessarily die, either. It was the shock of seeing Cresta's... bare body, near Gumball. That irked his nerves.

'I need to get out of here,' Marshall thought through the pain in his skull.

No sooner had the vampire sat up, than he was met with a stinging pain in his leg, his eyes finding Peppermint Maid with an apologetic look on her face. He barely heard her voice as he fell back to the mattress of the hospital room, now unable to move his body.

"Sorry, Marshall, sweetie. Doctor's orders."

"Yeah..." Marshall murmured before trailing off, his eyes closing, his mind meeting him with visions from the past.

"Marshy!" The girl's high pitched laughter filled the air around the vampire. Marshall couldn't help but to smile as he fell to his knees outside of the Candy Castle, feeling small, gummy arms wrap around his neck. "Marshy! I missed you," the girl coo'ed.

Now no more than 13, Lisette, princess of the Candy Kingdom pressed a small kiss to the vampire's forehead before speaking once-more, her eyes widening as she released Marshall from her arms.

He pulled a small box from his pocket, holding it up to the princess, tilting his head to the side as he spoke, a small smile gracing the normally devious face of the vampire. "I brought you some Nightosphere Chocolates, Princess." Marshall got to his feet after speaking, towering over the girl as she took the velvet box from his hands. "They're the best thing you'll ever taste."

Lisette raised one of her perfect eyebrows, her hair blowing slightly in the moderate breeze as she responded to the vampire's statement. "Promise?"

Marshall extended his pinky in the same way he had when he'd met the girl, his own low laughter sounding like music to his ears. "Pinky promise, Lisette."

The Princess giggled delightedly as she linked her finger with Marshall's, his cool skin no longer daunting to the girl who had learned to find comfort in him.

At the time, the vampire didn't know that he'd found comfort in this small girl, either. He was oblivious.

Marshall's consciousness came and went that day, bringing different memories to him in the form of dreams.

Fast forward a few years.

Christmas time.

The Candy Castle was lit up by a myriad of beautiful colors, and no one was more excited about this celebration than the 17 year old princess.

The king had told Lisette she had to choose a husband, anyone who made her happy.

Lisette placed a quick kiss to Marshall Lee's lips. He was who she had chosen.

"Lisette, are you sure I look okay? For the celebration, I mean. I always look okay." Marshall had laughed nervously, fiddling with the tie wrapped around his neck.
