I may spend most of my time alone, but that does not mean I’m lonely. As I walk down the hallway and look around, I can’t help but wonder where they’re going. Most of the people here don’t plan on leaving this boring, little town. They feel safe and content with their lives, but I don’t see how they can be so satisfied. I mean, there has to be something else. I can’t be the only one that feels this way, at least that’s what I tell myself.
I’ve been alone since I was nine, and by now I’m perfectly fine with it. That was the year that my mom left. Well, she didn’t really leave, she died, but that’s not what my father seems to think. Even those she’s dead, he still half expects her to walk through the door one night and yell, “Honey, I’m home!” It’s not like he would be there, if she did come home. He’d be at work. I guess it’s his distraction. My distraction is New York City.
I have yet to actually visit the city, but it seems like everyone there is so independent and full of life. I’m hoping it will be a pleasant change from the mundane life I’m living now. When my mom died it was a big deal, and since then my life has been colorless. I used to be upset and angry about this, but now that I’m a senior, I’ve learned to just try not to care. It may seem depressing, but thinking of New York is what keeps me sane.
So, I spend my time listening to other people’s problems. Although, what’s considered a problem here is not very severe, it’s my source of entertainment. I’m not trying to be mean; it’s just hard to take people seriously when their biggest problem is who they will take to prom.
I’m not completely alone, I have Bella and Kate. I wouldn’t say we’re best friends but they’re probably the closest thing I have. Kate and I have been friends since second grade. I know she’s a little embarrassed by me, but we still talk a lot outside of school. During school though, Kate fits better with the popular crowd. After all, she’s tall and gorgeous, and we’ll just say she’s popular amongst the boys.
Bella moved here a few years back. She encouraged me to join the basketball team and since then we’ve been close. Bella is a girl of many talents. She is our varsity point guard and starts every game. She is friends with pretty much everyone and has the voice of an angel. I guess some people are just luckier than others.
