Jessica’s P.O.V.

Will and I finish our food and he drives me back to my house. The ride home is thankfully much less awkward now that we’ve had a chance to talk. His words replay in my head, “…in the future…” I’m probably just overthinking things as usual. He didn’t mean anything by it.

We pull up to my empty driveway and Will asks, “Are you here all alone?”

“Yup. My dad’s at work,”  I mumble, “…as usual.”

“What about your mom?” he questions. “Is she here?”

“Umm, no, she’s just not here right now,” I lie.

            “Well, Jess-”

“It’s Jessica.” I cut him off.

“Well, Jessica, do you want me to stay and drive you to basketball?”

“No, i-its fine. I better go,” I say already opening the door.

“Wait! Maybe we should exchange phone numbers in case of an emergency,” he says jokingly. I nod and put my number in his phone while fighting a smile.

………………………………………

At basketball, I immediately run over to warm up with Bella.

“How’d your shopping go?” she laughed.

I can’t help but laugh with her. “It was fine. And by the way, thank you for leaving me like that. How’d things with your dad go?” I asked, trying to make conversation, something I’ve never been good at.

“It was fun. We just went out to dinner and talked for a while, nothing special,” Bella said unknowingly.

“Nothing special,” I repeat, accidently. I haven’t gone out to dinner with my father in years. He’s always too busy.

I manage to get through the practice and Bella drives me home afterward.

When I get in the house I take a quick shower and immediately call my dad.

“Hey, Dad, I was just wondering if, maybe, you wanted to go get some food with me tomorrow and just talk for a bit.” I wait to hear his answer.

“Jessica, you know I am busy at work. Was this call really necessary? I don’t have time to go to dinner; my schedule is booked up this week. There’s take out in the fridge for tonight.”

“Oh, okay,” I say, more than a little let down.

“And Jessica, don’t think we won’t have a discussion about the call I received from Mr. Harrison tomorrow morning. Do you do things just to disappoint me?” he adds, in his usual, harsh tone.

“Dad, I have an explanation-”

“I have to go. Goodnight Jessica. Don’t call again, I’m working.” The line goes dead.

“I love you,” I mutter, grabbing last night’s take out from the fridge. Another night alone.
